StarCraft will bring me back a couple of decades. Cheers!

Some people don't even know what Starcraft is, back in the day it was liiiiiife!

        • in the pipe… 5 by 5

          • +2

@UFO: Starcraft stole that from Aliens I think.

            • @Xastros: Yep… I picked up on that when I first heard it in the game too! I reckon its even the same voice actor/sound bite, sounds exact.

              • @UFO: That's cool. To this day I have no idea what it means. Heard it so many times lol.

                • +5

@Xastros: It's a rating normally used for radio comms… 1 being bad, up to 5 being good.
"How do you read me? Five by Five". Perfect clarity and Perfect loudness.

In Aliens, "in the pipe" refers to the aircraft's positioning within a preferred travel corridor. Think of a literal pipe winding through the terrain… and the best spot to travel in that pipe is dead center as you're moving along (completely away from bad weather or physical obstacles).

"5 by 5" is perfectly in the middle of that pipe (X and Y axis). Not too high, not too low, not left, not right.

When she says "in the pipe 5 by 5", she's looking at her nav computer and is flying perfectly within the designated travel path, dodging the most severe weather etc.

          • +4

@Damonator84: Somebody call for an exterminator?

Mannnnn LANs…..now i feel old. We would play this for 2 days straight hooked on soft drink. Good times.

          • +1

@Damonator84: Before LAN came in I think serial cable…. Used to lug the desktop and just play serial with another

LAN then came, uni weekend LAN parties, file sharing DC connect etc

      • +2

1997 wasn't it? I think everyone in high school were addicted to that game. It was phenomenal, nothing like it out there. Even getting the original disc and opening it was exciting…

Friends gathered to grab brood wars expansion raving about it at maccas. Internet Cafe was a thing and LAN games were the go

        • Yes, I worked at Korean internet cafe, PC-bang.
          It was the hell…..Hellcraft.

    • +7

Just in case anyone isn't aware, the SC2 community is very much alive and well.

      • +5

I never did manage to get out of bronze league.

      • And if you get ladder anxiety but still want to play you could play co-op instead.

    • Ah.. show me the money and black sheep wall days…

  • +5

I'm so out of the loop, TIL there's a Starcraft Remaster?
Cool, looking forward to revisiting some of that nostalgia 😃

    • +13

It just makes stuff look prettier they didn't really update any quality of life things like buggy pathing or selecting more units. And the Warcraft 3 remaster is a disaster that Blizzard gave up on supporting.

      • +16

To say they butchered the WC3 remaster is an understatement. I'm super glad I waiting and saw release reviews.
It's a shame because that was such a fun RTS

        • +8

Not only did they butcher the remaster, they butchered the original too! The update was mandatory, you just didn't get the updated visuals if you didn't pay.

I know someone that had just got back into playing it, only to log in one day and find it suddenly broken.

          • +2

            @Vool: Absolute train wreck.

            • +2

@InsertCrow: I'm still so pissed they messed that up. Spent so many hours on WC3 and then Dota.

              • @Munki: Same, fond memories of setting WC3 up for LAN games at high school

        • +2

The custom maps of WC3 were such a treat - you had coop zombie survival, pyramid escapes, anime roleplay dota, tower defence, and minigames that were plagiarised from mario party. Most of these maps had "saves," so you'd keep the same level, stats, and items across different sessions

Age of Mythology, on the other hand, had some top tier sheep escapes due to the teleporter system

        • +1

War3 was legendary as it created DoTa and LoL MOBA games. Pretty sure lots of new gamers have no idea about that.

War3 served well between SC1 and SC2 release

      • They intentionally left the buggy pathing in the remaster to ensure the same strategies apply to units.

  • +22

    You must construct additional pylons.

    • Came looking for this, wasn't disappointed! :-)

    • We require more Vespene Gas

    • +1

Additional supply depots required….. You have Not Enough minerals

    • Base is under attack.

  • +8

You want a piece of me boiiii!

  • Anyone know if this version contains the bug where you can’t create interceptors or your valkyries don’t fire? I think it was some sprite limit or something.

    Classic.

    • +1

      It's fixed

    • +1

I'm still playing this since buying it on day one (the original I mean). This is the only game that I've purchased more than once. Even have the 'enhanced' units from getting the Remastered preorder - keep getting accused of hacking because my Nexus/Hatchery/Comm Centre looks different.

I pretty much only play UMS maps and you can now set it to not have the original unit build limits that caused them to not spawn.
I assume the campaign maps are the same but haven't checked.

  • +1

When does it end? Is it a full 30 days or do they pull it early? Asking because I've let my prime lapse and don't want to sign up immediately

    • +1

It should end on 2 Sep at 2am (full 31 days). I will know for sure once it starts.

    • End date confirmed. You can sign up at end of August to claim these games.

  • +1

Totally forgot last prime gaming deal :(

    • +7

As Master Yoda says, "The Greatest Teacher, Failure is."

      ;)

      • +2

I only set reminder for the first start date but the prime games didn't start until prime day :(

        • +1

You can set a new reminder if your original reminder doesn't suit.

          • +1

            @aquavires:

You can set a new reminder if your original reminder doesn't suit.

I forgot to change it after I found out the Prime games didn't start until prime day.

  • +1

ScourgeBringer is a nice fast-paced rougelite, for anyone who's into those. However it's one of those rougelites that really require you to earn numerous persistent upgrades before being able to have a decent shot at completing a run.

  • +2

    Goliath online.

    • System functional

    • +3

      Battlecruiser operational

  • Not familiar with prime gaming, do you get to keep the games even without an active subscription afterwards? Would the Starcraft Remastered be a separate standalone game or do you have to add it to your battlenet client to play it (ie amazon gives you a code or something)?.

    • +2

      Yes to keep

      • ok and is it a standalone game download/installation or does amazon give you a code to redeem in battlenet or what?

        • We will have to wait and see. No information yet.

        • +1

You need to link your Battle.net account with your Amazon account.

  • +5

To all SC fans, I found Mass Recall which is essentially SC1 using the SC2 engine. It's free to download.

    • Cool. Is this all the campaign maps?

      • +2

Yes sc1 + broodwar + some additional maps
        More info here https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/starcraft-2-mod-mass-recall…

        • +2

          latest version 8.0.1 here: https://www.sc2mapster.com/projects/starcraft-mass-recall

high recommended and it is way better than the official remastered version as I could not get used to the old SC1 control anymore. I hate limit of 12 for each team.

          • +2

@kajidzz: As someone who is replaying Starcraft Remastered, I downloaded Mass Recall out of interest. Aside from the QOL engine improvements between SC1 and SC2, and the amazing recreation of the briefing videos, I was very disappointed with how poor the map porting was. This is obviously a limitation of a fan made mod, but comparing maps in Mass Recall and Starcraft Remastered, it is not a comparable upgrade.

You can't beat the original in my opinion.

            • @soulblade64: Also tried it a few years back, have they tweaked the difficulty since then? I remember it being ridiculously difficult and unbalanced and heard their reasoning was due to those QoL and pathing differences etc.

              • @vawiyoci: Yes, that was version 7 or below.
I have only played version 8 and there were only a couple of maps where i had to refer to youtube to see how its done.

            • @soulblade64: Yeah the cutscenes are awesome. Those guys really did put the work in to MR.

        • I downloaded this and it broke my installation and had to uninstall

  • +2

Purchased StarCraft: Remastered when it was released, good old days. One of the best RTS game ever made (not StarCraft II).

    • Yeah for some reason I'm not attached to SC2

      • +2

Probably because you're older, less time to play and SC2 is much more punishing.

        • +1

Lol I guess a lot of original SC players are fairly old now you say

  • +3

    Wololo

  • +4

My first thought was, why are you posting an August deal now, that's months away? Then I looked at the date!

  • +2

    You Require More Vespene Gas

  • +3

I loved Zak McKracken…………….on the Commodore 64. No hate, I own it on GOG.

      nope.

Prime need to pay to be prime.

      • Fair point. I sometimes forget since I associate prime with Amazon shopping rather than gaming or streaming.

  • +1

    • +3

      No, they're yours to keep.

  • +3
