Best Travel Card for Europe

Hi

I am travelling in Europe for a month. I will be going to Italy, Germany, Prague and Istanbul.

Can anyone recommend which is the best card for us?

We will be carrying some cash for most of the countries. However, we will want to use card for some transactions, whether it is withdrawing cash from an ATM or paying via card.

Does anyone know which card is best?

We are open to pre-loading currencies on a card or even taking a credit card (such as 28 degrees).

We are looking for a card with the lowest fees.

Thanks

Be alert to possible threats, especially in public places or mass gatherings. Stay safe and be vigilant in large crowds."

Good luck with the cash advance fees if you plan to withdraw.

  • i just took my bankwest no international fee card and used it everywhere. Was fine.

Then loaded a bit of money on a travel card for anything that needed cash - didnt use it once.

Up or ING Direct debit card. No international fees.

    • +1. I usually take both of these (ING for the 5 fee-free ATM withdrawals) + 28 Deg for most purchases. Don't load currencies onto a card unless you are somehow very confident about how a particular currency's value in trending.

  • Long-term UK & EU traveller… IMHO:

    Credit card: Bankwest Platinum

Debit card (for ATM): Citibank Debit linked to a Citiplus A/C

    Respective benefits may be googled…

    • Same here!

Purchases go on Bankwest Platinum, and if I want cash I use either the Citibank plus or ING (depending on if there is a 3rd party ATM fee or not - ING has a limit of 5 withdrawals. But they rebate 3rd party fees and Citibank doesn't. I've found ATMs are free in most countries in EU at least for Citibank cards.
You can just use the debit cards for purchases, if you don't wanna get a credit card.

Also if you don't have a crystal ball or luck on your side, those load-and-go cards are always a bad deal. The spot conversion gives you the best rate IMHO.

Have more than one card on you. I've had my cards blocked so many times by banks just for using them at a dodgy coffee shop - A call to the bank would unblock it, but not the best when you're travelling and can't wait until you get to the hotel.

I'm also in Europe for most of next month, also going to Prague and Berlin, maybe we might even walk past each other at a Museum

  • I’m using Revolut card in the uk atm. No issues here. Also have a wise account if needed.
Works fine going to any other location in any other currency as well

  • Hi, similar situation here and signed my partner up to revolut. Easy to setup, transferred cash to the account and converted to EURO in a matter of 10min. Just waiting on the delivery of the physical card but looks the part. Hope that helps
