Famous Aussies with AmEx Centurion Card?

I was recently reading an article about famous people in the US with an American Express Centurion card. I guess it is more of a status symbol there.

(I didn’t realise Jerry Seinfeld was apparently the first one offered this card)

Are there any famous Australians who flaunt the Centurion? My first guess would be like Mike Cannon Brookes or someone like that. Maybe famous sports people.

  • So famous that I had to google who that two-dads bloke was

  • My first guess would be like Mike Cannon Brookes

Who? That's not a name that leaps to the front of mind, billionaire or not.

  • Is centurion the black card? If so I used to work for someone with one. Not sure I'd call them famous but the name would be recognised by a fair few I guess.

      Don Burke?

      • Less famous, far more wealthy but I'm not actually going to say. It was a long time ago now and not really important.

    • Yes, it's the black card that was once oh so highly secretive/selective.

If you go on the AFF forums, there's an entire thread dedicated to posters complaining that the Centurion perks aren't as good as it used to be.

    • The card isn't as selective as it used to be either. The opinions on AFF are usually biased on the perks of the card cause most of those who hold a black card and are active on AFF already qualify/have the perks from elsewhere so the benefits aren't that great to them. That being said, even if you don't have the benefits from elsewhere the annual fee and joining fee makes it hard to justify the cost (and makes the card really aimed at those with lots of disposable income and very little care about where it's being spent).

      • Not really, not all on there

    • Yeah was tempted to request an invite but the perks with the 6.5k AF just aren't there

  • You don't need to be famous to have the Centurion Card.

Just need to spend a crapton on an Amex Platinum Charge card and have suitable income.

  • Got an invite a few years ago when I charged everything for the business on my platinum charge (>200k year). At that time it was a $5000 annual fee plus some sort of initiation fee.

The perks aren't that much bettern than the platinum charge (at least for me) the travel credit isn't higher and it's hard to make it add up.

    • Yikes $5000 annual fee!

      • It gets worse I was just reading the new benefits/charges on AFF due to FOMO and it's been increased to $6500 for this year. Plus you have to pay the joining fee.

But you get some foofy prada card holder and custom designed cards. Utter rubbish.

    • Yeah since the AF increase its not worth

Though someone did get paid out $6k for delayed luggage, it arrived more than 48hrs after so Amex paid $6k insurance claim

  • My thoughts on amex reinforced with this…

  • I wonder if you can get more than 5 supplementary cards.

A low rate card was all you needed to gain access to the members lounge at Vogue. Free booze and food. How much better can the perks get.

    • You can if you have a business Amex; as many as 99 supps

      • which seems to get very few credit offers

Somehow I ended up with 7 supps plus my main card and A/C card when I had my plat charge years ago. So all up, 9 cards. Shop Small and various credit offers were fun. I think in 1 year I managed to get a couple of grand worth of credits through the 9 cards….ah, those were the days.

Got rid of it at the start of COVID as I wasn't going anywhere and the credit offers were drying up.

  • I'm pretty sure a few people on ozbargain have this card.
