New Car Rego Period?

I bought a brand new Hyundai i30 sedan. I paid full price, so this is what the recommended drive away price for my state. Website said that this is with 12 months rego. But when I picked up the car it only had 3 months. Dealer said some excuse related to me getting free 3 years of service. This was a promo they had for signing contract before June 30th. Felt I had no option so accepted and drove off with the car. Does this sound right as I thought that brand new cards would come with 12 month?

What was written on the sales contract?

If it doesn't match, something is wrong.

    If it matched /thread.

OzB posts pattern, most likely you haven't told us plot twist something in your post.

    • Contract was emailed to me and I signed. Line item for rego said "CTP and registration". Cost of this $164. No mention of term but in retrospect this is less than 1 years worth. Dealer said that in person he would have gone through line items but they never did with me as he emailed me.

      • On my contract it said Registration Fee $306.90 and CTP at $539.

        • 306.90 + 539 = 845.90

          $845.90 / 4qtrs = $211.48

Sounds about right for what OP got included, 3 months.

@SF3: Sounds right for the price on paper, but I think that there's a general expectation that you're negotiating on a car that comes with 12 months rego (unless a shorter period of rego is specifically called out at the time. And if it was, I would expect that this would be something the dealer would get the buyer to initial on the contract).

            • @bobbified: Yeah, I agree.

Something seems to be missing in the story (not saying OP is wrong), the contractual deal seems to be done via email too. I would have thought the sales contract is written up on the spot at the dealership and any doubts or run through items are done there and then.

@SF3: Does sound a bit strange. OP said that he/she paid the full driveaway price on the website (that says it includes 12 months rego). If that's the case, then there wouldn't have been any negotiation over the price.

Sounds like the dealer has found a new way to make an extra few hundred bucks on top (and hoping noone notices)!

              • @SF3: Thank you for saying, "would have" & not "would of".

But when I picked up the car it only had 3 months

I have never seen or heard of a car, bought brand new from a dealer, come with 3 months rego! I think you've been screwed! lol

    • Or the dealer only paid for 3 months? In VIC we have 3,6 and 12 month rego options.

Bought an i30 base model and a Staria Highlander and both came with 12 months rego. No free servicing though.

      • Yeh, the dealer must've only paid three months. I've bought a number of cars before (and have been there many times when friends have bought cars too) and rego has never been a negotiable item. It's always been 12 months.

        • Thanks that's what I thought. Will have to contact them and see if they budge on this.

        • Yea bit dodgy not telling the OP, but it looks like he only paid for 3 months on the contract.

@omguleh: But I paid full drive away price which is same as on Hyundai website which states 12 months.

@kman83: Interesting, I would screenshot that drive away price with the terms and conditions and take it up with the dealer principle, skip all the middle man.

              • @omguleh: Thanks. Will do now that I have confirmed that it should have always been 12 months.

                • @kman83: Did the advertised drive away price match the price on the contract?

                  • @omguleh: I paid $37,405
                    Website shows $37,416

Free service was a promo for signing up before EOFY for some dealers in SA though Stillwell Hyundai group.

        Here's link to promo

Please name the dealer to help people avoid or aware and better negotiate.

  • Registration and CTP doesn't come free just because you buying a new car. You paying for it.

Check the invoice, if there no item closer to $1000. Then it is what it is. Otherwise it's bit deceiving by putting the finial driveway price bit low.

    • Yes but most dealers include 12 months drive away. Standard T&C on Hyundai website says 12 months but with a caveat saying check with your dealer as it may differ.

Sorry to say this but the i30 sedan is hideous. I will give props to you though for buying a sedan in today's day and age of crossovers and SUVs.

Fair enough as I like the style. Already had a SUV and wanted a car to replace my old Honda City.

Seem like a well organised outfit….
