Does a Poe Security Camera Need an NVR?

Hi guys,

Is there a way to setup a Poe security camera without NVR and use a windows/Linux based PC for recording?

  • Check out the google responses to the following search:
    open source Poe Security Camera

  • You can also get a Poe that has a memory card that can do the recording. Like one from reolink. Which is accessible from computer/phone

    • Thinking of buying this…

Reolink 4K Outdoor Security Camera, Smart Human/Vehicle Detection Work with Google Assistant PoE IP Camera, 256GB Micro SD Storage for 24/7 Recording(not Included), RLC-810A

      • I have on of those, it's good. The rest I have are 5MP which I think is plenty.

      • Not sure what they mean by Recording (not included). Maybe thats to indicate its not a NVR. But works well with their app and you can look back. I guess the big difference being that the length of recording saved its only a few days vs an NVR which would be many more days/weeks before being over written.

        • I think the card is not included. That's what I thought.

Look into software such as: Blue Iris, Frigate or Zoneminder.

Keep in mind you will need the computer to stay on 24/7.

You can either buy IP cameras that record footage to an internal SD card, or buy cameras that support RTSP protocol and then use a NAS to store your footage on. e.g

Recording to SD card will be the cheapest solution, and probably 'good enough' for most home users. I've got 2 Reolink E1 / E1 Zooms setup which will only record to the SD card if it detects movement, so it's not recording 24/7. If you want full 24 hour recording you're going to want either a NAS or a DIY setup with software like Blueiris or Shinobi.

Shinobi is also free (open source). https://gitlab.com/Shinobi-Systems/Shinobi. Note that shinobi should not be run on a virtual machine, but on a machine on it's own (bare metal)

You need to buy decent SD cards. I got a bunch of $6 kogans and they all died. If you have 8 cameras at $30 per SD card then you get into the price area of a NVR. An NVR is also very convenient for powering the cameras. Otherwise you need to hunt down power supplies. But it will work without it and it's ok if you have 1 or 2 cameras.

    • I have a few of ring cameras but I am planning to get one which is of higher resolution than what I have currently.

  • Yes, Reolink PoE cameras, in addition to microSD storage, offer decent PC application to record video as well as FTP storage functionality.
