Tuxedo/Dinner jacket (Sydney or Cairns)

I've got an event coming up in October and was wondering where to get a decent dinner jacket. The problem is I have no bloody idea on where to buy a dinner jacket, I've only ever bought suits and hired dinner jackets.

So far I'm thinking:

  1. Off the rack for around $750

I actually have no idea where to buy a dinner jacket off the rack… lol. So yeah any help in regards to this would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just pointing me to a store in either Sydney or Cairns.

  1. Or if it's to be tailored $1-1.5k (1k might be a bit low… I remember getting a quote 3 years ago for 1.1k…)
Now I have no idea which tailor to go to, again any help with directions to a decent tailor in Sydney or Cairns would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, if you're gonna spend ~$1500 then you could consider a cheap airfare to Thailand, have holiday, buy tailored dinner jacket…two birds, one stone! :)

That is one possibility… but I don't have the time to fly overseas… That and I've got about 18 flights between Cairns and Sydney lined up this year… not to mention my trip to Europe in January… I don't think my body likes the radiation hahaha

Also with flights and accommodation probably taking up ~$1k, what is the quality going to be like for ~$500?… (fabric cost will be pretty even across the board no?)

      • I must admit, it's been a couple of years since I had my suits made; but since you only want a dinner jacket IMHO AUD$500 should get you very nice one indeed…probably with a couple of nice tailored shirts thrown in too!

You've gotta check a few out too IME, the good ones will proudly show you their fabrics first! Ex-pat Aussies or Americans working in the better hotels or corporations over there can usually point you in the right direction for this kind of thing! :)

I can understand why you're reluctant to do any more flying, you're spending more time in the air than Chuck Yeager!!! Yeah, given those constraints, maybe off the rack might be a better option for you. ;)

You really had to mention very didn't you? Now I'm starting to consider flying… I'd get a few other suits done if I was to do this and probably a dozen or so shirts lol… So tempting… The problem would then be how to get them all home without creasing any of them in check-in luggage…

How long would it take them to do this? A week or two?

          Edit:
Just took a look at the costs of flights when I'm available… $1.2-1.5k…. that idea's out the window…

I can sympathise, that usually happens to me too…everyone else seems to get the awesome ~$500-$800 flights! :(

FWIW, depending on how busy the tailor is, (and how many you order) they're normally pretty quick…my last two suits were ready for second fitting in 3-4 days, ready for pickup in under a week total. The good tailors also know you're gonna be packing them, so in my case they wrapped each article individually in plastic bags which really minimised the creasing. A quick steam when I got back & you'd never know they'd been in a suitcase!

A mate reckons rolling them is the way to go, but I couldn't bring myself to do it to my new suits! :)

        • Rolling?
I was told to turn inside out and fold down the middle of the back…
