This is an awesome upgrade for anyone still using an AM4 motherboard and wants an FPS boost in games for the lowest upgrade price… You would need to step up to a 5800X3D or Intel 12600 / 12700 if you wanted something notably better then a R5 5600 in games. but all those options would cost way more.

    • +3

I agree. 12600kf is 68% more expensive and only beats 5600 by a few percent on average @1440p.

      • weird choice of comparison, imo, especially so for the "k" version?

the 12400(f) and 12700(f) are the value champions currently, depending if you're just gaming or also heavily using productivity apps

        • I'm not a big time techhead so forgive me for asking, would the i5 12400f still be the better buy considering with this deal the AMD 5600 can be had for around $50 cheaper than the intel chip and appears to be able to do the gaming/office/productivity thing at a decent standard? The 12400f doesn't seem to pop up in many deals or hasn't as of late.

@HeyThereJim: Intel motherboards can cost more.

check 5600 vs i5-12400F vid here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5N8SzBSzsk skip to 10min55sec
i5-12400F prices listed here and here, eBay cost abit more atm

@HeyThereJim: 12400f vs 5600 is pretty similar with 5600 slightly better by a few percent on average, depends on the game/productivity app. Currently amd has b550 boards which can help keep the overall system price lower than Intel however, Intel Z690 boards will have option to upgrade to 13 series cpu when they release and some other advantages like pcie5.0 and ddr5.
You will need to decide if you opt for ddr5 or ddr4 as this will affect your overall price/performance as well.

            • @rainbowunicorn: Thanks for the breakdown. I hadn't actually thought about the future proofing aspect, more just in terms of current performance/availability vs cost etc.

              • +1

@HeyThereJim: it's really a toss up now, 12400f used to be ~$50 cheaper than the 5600 for allllllllmost identical performance which made it the clear choice for those without existing AM4 setups to upgrade from. (until this deal, hope this will be the normal 5600 pricing going forward)

if you're going with the 12400(etc), local HardwareUnboxed channel has great recommendations for mobos around the ~$150-$200 range with very capable VRM and quality of life features (type c… pciegen4, etc…) personally i don't see the appeal of z690 for this generation.

@xrailgun: That's a really good link thanks for that. I'm hoping the intel chips drop in price also as the drop in AMD chips is kind of for nought if the motherboard prices continue to stay sky high.

Ugh, bought the 5600G for my nephew’s birthday when they had them for $309 a few days ago. $30 is a tough amount to let go for my bargain basement ass 😑

    • Does he have a graphics card?

    • This is the 5600, not the 5600G.

Thanks OP. Bought one for $234 delivered from shallothead. Not sure how I ended up with $15 unique code from ebay.

It looks as if this seller is OOS already.

  • I saw a YT'er saw that with the drop in bitcoin prices, there are going to be a tonne of cheap gpus on the market shortly. Not sure how much water it holds. What are your thoughts, fellow ozbargainers?

  • Somehow there was an add to cart button, and I managed to buy one today xD

    • congrats! maybe somebody cancelled. :)

      • lol. A few hours after I bought this, a $12 cheaper one came up on PLE I think xD

  • Everyone happy with the 5600 from shallothead/shopping express? I can't test mine yet as I don't have a compatible motherboard.
