Preparations for Tesla Model Y Delivery

So I have placed an order for the model Y based on an impulse.
Now that a delivery date has been confirmed, I am looking for tips on what preparations I should be looking into? e.g.
Insurance,
After market accessories,
Charging (I do not have solar at the moment).

So much misguided and uninformed figures in this statement. I'll debunk your first fact on charging though… $3k - $5k to fast charge? Reality is most people won't need fast charging and those that "want" fast charging aren't spending anywhere near that amount. I'd say a reasonable figure is more like a one off $600 to get a system that would charge overnight while you're sleeping. Your other figures are quite exaggerated too, but whatever works.

      • -8

Lol you tesla fan boys have absolutely no clue. Not even going to bother wasting my time on it any further, good luck with your Tesla's.

        • +4

Never said I was a fanboy. So another great assumption. And thanks for the neg and mature discussion.

    • +6

You should all read my post above. I’ve owned my model 3 for 12 months, done 47k, paid less than $500 in charging during that time, spent $300 on an electrician installing a charging plug, pay $1068 in comprehensive insurance and paid $66k incl ORC 12 months ago. I already had solar and 3 phase power at home. They’re the facts.

      • +3

noooooo…. how dare you post actual facts and figures from real life accounts! Can't you see the effort A5tro has gone to, to discredit EV's based on uneducated opinion and back of envelope calculations that don't bare any resemblance to actual fact or logic?

I think you've been very insensitive to his illogical ranting ;).

      • +1

It's interesting I'm yet to come across anyone who has owned one and said they hated it and they will never buy another Tesla yet I constantly hear abusive, hateful comments from people who have never owned one and they want to preach to the actual owners that they are wrong and they know better about these cars than the owners.

        • I do know of one, owns a model X. Had a number of issues and think they are overpriced and won't buy another (was bought for the other half). Though the 3 and Y are not in the same price bracket I suppose.

          • @x d: Of course you will run into some. I personally haven't, but statistically the below tells the real story as opposed to trolls?

            https://www.forbes.com/sites/jimhenry/2021/12/31/tesla-no-1-…

Isn't it interesting people say they are such terrible cars, but 70% of owners that disposed of their Tesla replaced it with another Tesla?

            • @dji1111111: Just saying it's not good to say everything is rosy with Teslas as he's the only Tesla owner that I know personally to ask about, so it's 1 out of 1 which makes it 100%.

              • @x d: who said everything is rosy?

I certainly didn't and nobody on this thread did either.

1 out of 1 makes 100%? Sample size of 1 is meaningless

Here you go. another updated stats in 2022. They improved yet again.

                https://insideevs.com/news/596255/tesla-bucks-industrywide-t…

Probably enough proof that people who either hasn't even tried the car or can't even afford to buy one are just posting hateful comments

                • +1

@dji1111111: I'm glad you agree that not every thing is rosy with Tesla. I'd rather be warned about issues before jumping into buying one, and the reason I queried it with my friend.

And that is what I find amusing. I'm in the process of putting down an order for the model Y, in particular the performance version. I have test driven the base model with the 20 inch wheels and went back the second time to spend more time with the showroom car so yes I have evaluated it as much as I can looking at the positives and negatives. What I find not helpful is people defending the Tesla to the end even for characteristics which are clearly not as good and could be so much better (examples I have seen include some writing that the stupid BSM in the Tesla showing a picture on the central screen is safer than an indicator on the mirror itself, or that the stiff ride in the Y is due to weight of the car when it's really due to the rather high factory tyre pressure recommendation in the name of efficiency compared to similar cars which are just as heavy if not heavier).

Your reference is good for the brand but I'd rather JD Power's dependability study which I am concerned about with Tesla's position on there for long term ownership.

                  • @x d: No statistics is perfect. Tell the people involved in Toyota class action or recalls and ask them about Toyota ranking highly in JD Power's survey.

No car in the world is perfect. Even the ones costing 300k+

                    • +1

@dji1111111: Hmm…you presented 2 publications supporting Tesla cars but now dispute JD Power's dependability results. Do you only use statistics only when it suits your needs?

Car's costs don't have high correlation in reliability, but rather who engineered and manufactured them, and Tesla's need to show some improvement in this regard.

                      • @x d: I did not do such thing so please don't create fictional story. you are the one who basically said JD power's is the one you prefer.
I merely suggested that your reliance on JD powers survey is misguided.

Can you not read? I said no statistics is perfect. That applies to the sources I posted and JD Powers.
I merely choose to base my decision my own research which indicates that an overwhelming percentage of actual owners of Tesla love their car and even decides to buy another one.
Subaru is another brand that I know people trust and they also rank highly in the brand loyalty survey, which further strengthens my belief in the data

                        • +1

@dji1111111: By saying that relying on JD powers survey is misguided tells readers that you suggest that it is inaccurate. Why would choosing a Toyota (other than one known to have DPF issues) not give me a much higher statistical chance of having a dependable car than choosing a Tesla as per JD Power dependability survey report (ie dismissing this statistical analysis because it doesn't suit you)?

Your suggestion of asking Toyota owners with recalls or in the class action regarding Toyota's reputation for reliability is no different to me asking owners with Teslas being stranded with failed batteries, dead drive units and other issues, of which there are quite a few on TMC forum, would they recommend buying another Tesla.

                          • @x d: Hence why I said no statistics is perfect. I can guarantee you however no brand will retain customer loyalty if their cars were that bad

      • How in the world do you cover 47000 km in 12 months? That's approx 130 km per day, or if you only travel 5 days per week, that's 180 km per day!

In 2.5 yrs time, you will have reached 160000km and battery and drive train warranty will expire (unless it's not the base model). Any concerns then?

        • +1

47k in 12 months! I know, crazy right?! Never did more than 12k in our previous cars….but this car is a dream to drive. It’s very comfortable for long trips. We’re retired so we have time to enjoy exploring our beautiful (sunshine) state and beyond…..

  • +1

Remember most single phase home has 63amps now (heard this is the max these days due to energy rating) and your single phase charger will use 32 amps out of them.

Some 'smart' chargers can measure main power consumption and reduce EV charging to ensure it won't overload tho not sure how flexible and robust it is.

Its a pretty funny stereotype and they are annoying but I like the fact the owners are passionate about their cars and love them. I'd rather this behaviour than people driving around in joyless MG's and Mitsubishi ASX's.

      • -2

        its a car…..it takes your from A to B

you dont fuk it, it doesnt fuk u, it doesnt cuddle you

        people are weird

        • +1

Sure. people are weird because you treat cars as nothing but a mode of transport.
Ok, you must be right lol
People do get attached to inanimate objects. Some have precious luxury watch they look after like nothing else, some do that with cars or other collectibles.
If that bugs you so much, I think you need to see a professional ASAP

          • -1

@dji1111111: you should see the people who buy inanimate sex dolls and fall in love with them

            • +2

@MrThing: Do you have the ability to think of anything from non-sexual way or you only think about that whole day? lol
Truly weird coming from someone who claims others are weird for having more care for their cars than treating it as a mode of transport to get from A to B.

      Indeed…

      Preparation 1 - BRAG POST 101:
Yes, a brag post, one of the first preparations of becoming a Tesla owner and OP has already nailed this one! time to move on to the next lesson…

      Preparation 2 - FAUX ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN 101
In this lesson, OP will learn how to act suddenly more concerned about the environment in conversation, and how this will undoubtedly lead to more opportunity to talk about why he bought a Tesla and will never go back to a dirty ICE.

      Preparation 3 - ADVANCED SMUGNESS 201
When normal people seem disinterested in the teachings of faux environmental concern, learn about Nose Snubbery to practice showing ICE drivers that they are now beneath you. A necessary trait of Tesla owners which is intended to teach others to better themselves.

      Preparation 4 - ADVANCED ENTITLEMENT 301
In this lesson, learn how to congregate with other Tesla owners and complement them on being one of the club. Unite to lobby governments, and private corporations to cater for your group's specialness in advancing society. Promote your entitlement to special privileges such as discounted registrations, tolls, and parking fees, special free parking spaces that replace those pesky disabled parks adjacent to doors, and entitlement to free energy at such parking spaces (and learn how to rebut comments from ICE owners about the electricity coming from coal). Graduate after this lesson with a deeply ingrained understanding of your newfound superiority over common humanity.

    Vaahan Pooja
In Hindu culture, there is an old tradition to pray for all new items before they are used. For vehicles, it is called Vaahan Pooja, in which the owner will pray for a new car to help it become harmonious to the house and avoid any bad lucks in the future. This tradition is of great importance since it will show gratitude to the god, help protect the car and the driver from misfortunes and accidents. New car Pooja can be done at home whenever a new car is purchased. This ritual can also be conducted on special occasions or festivals such as Bhai-Dooj, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Navratri.

    • +1

Why dont we skip the fancy bits and run it through a river and wash it’s sins upon arrival

  • +2

I would have looked at all the preparations 1st before committing.

  • Just do not be akin to the self opinionated jerk that insists on parking her Tesla in an Emergency Fire and Ambulance bay along with blocking the only walkway access while bleating she is working in the Health Industry and it is raining so has to park close by!

    • +1

only last week when I was at the shops did I see a Tesla model S parked in the only remaining disabled park at the door - of course, with obligatory personalised plate with reference to something like Watts or EV or tesla or Volts or something like that. Then I saw the guy come get in it, prestige real estate agent looking type, I think he may have even had a lightning bolt pattern shaved into the lower side of his slick hair cut, $1000 sunglasses on, and low and behold he wasn't disabled at all - just entitled. What a shock.

…I think this stereotype is more reserved to an even more special group of Model S owners though. I couldn't see him in a Y

      • I see that in a Camry too. Well, once saw a 911 too. Those are tools, less relevant to the car.

Plenty in the CBD. Certain western/south west burbs in Sydney have a comparatively higher disabled to normal ratio than other Sydney areas.

  • An actual high yield investment!

I believe these cars are actually worth more 2nd hand because people cant get them.

The second you drive it away from the dealership you've made money!

  • +4

So this is what that South Park episode was about, cause god damn this post is 100% a 'look at me' flex.

  • If it's your first tesla, make sure you test drive before delivery so you are comfortable with change in gear position, display menu since u need to look sideways for speed. Try searching a cheaper insurance, they are expensive for my friends model 3.

I will keep waiting for my atto 3 😍

  • +1

One thing this post has confirmed is that there are heaps of people with mental issues on this forum.
All this hate all because the OP bought a Tesla haha
If you don't like the car you don't have to buy one, but others don't have to not buy one just because you hate it.
Flex? Who bloody flexes with a 75k car? He didn't even say something ridiculous like "Tesla is the best car in the world"
People getting all hung up and frustrated with this post is only dealing with their own financial insecurity and inadequacy.

Also, why do people berate Tesla buyers about environment and assume they bought one to make a positive impact on environment? lol
A lot of owners did not even factor in environmental concerns in their purchasing decision.

All things said, I have no idea why the OP posted this question here because it might as well be pre-scripted as to what the response would be like.
It would have been quicker and far more effective to just watch a few YouTube videos instead from real owners rather than these trolls lol

OP, you must be new here. A select group of people on OzBargain wants to turn OzBargain into OzPovo and prohibit anyone who's not scraping the bottom of the barrel from participating in this community

    • But Tesla is the best car in the world, ever, period :)

      • No, they are not and there is no such thing as best car in the world. Only stupid fools search for the best car in the world.
Best car in the world is what suits your current needs, budget and your preference.

        • +1

You say people on this forum have mental issues, but you seem to have zero social capabilities to interpret what is clearly a sarcastic comment.

In fact, most of the replies on this entire thread is just users trolling the op lol, but once again, you cant seem to grasp that :)

    • +1

can't disagree with you there and thats why I suggest the OP to seek answers from other relevant forums. just imagine if OP asked about taycan or something more expensive. OzB is turning into an interesting place these days.

  • -1

ffs it's just a tesla, come back and ask the same question when you get a car over $300k.

    • +1

hey richkid, why does he have to get a car that costs more than $300k to ask a question?
It's only losers' twisted mind that thinks the OP was trying to flex lol

  • Yeah. Get an 11 or 12kW charging cable from EVSE.
Then download Plugshare and Chargefox apps, find your nearest Mennekes/Type 2 chargers. You will not get 22kW, it's just how it is. You will want to use these chargers close to home to keep your usage costs low. Do not DCFC close to home, that is for trips.

You will want to also plan long trips with ABetterRoutePlanner so you will be able to save on Supercharger fees.

Get floor mats from a 3rd party. Organise paint protection and get window tinting sorted out as well (tint a car do this). Organise parking, ie keep it garaged.

Do all that, and you'll be a very happy owner.

Also, check in on plugshare everytime you use a charger - idiots choose not to, and piss everyone off.

    • "You will want to use these chargers close to home to keep your usage costs low"

This is what I don't get. If you are buying an $80K car, why would the electricity cost to charge at home off peak which is probably about $500 a year be a problem?

      • Because it's an 11-12 kWh charge, rather than a 2kWh charge rate. 60kW charged in 5 hours is better than the same in 30hrs.

Much faster, much more reliable, much more cost effective to use public infrastructure as it justifies planned developments of EV support infrastructure.

Maintenance/Usage Cost is always a factor, regardless of the vehcle's cost to purchase. The less this is, the better your margins when selling/trading are likely to be

        achew
        'scuse me

        • Surely you know about the 32A tail that can go into the UMC to bring the charge rate up to 7kWh for overnight charging with a 32 A power point, which I gather from research should cost only a few hundred dollars to install, and should allow full overnight charge.

Owners are surely not going to park the car in a public charger for up to 5 hours right? The only situation that I see this being necessary is if you are renting and you don't have permission to install a 32 A power point.

Fair enough for the last statement. I would have thought though that buying an $80k car means that you have the capacity to extend a bit further instead of trying to save $500 a year (as time means money), though I must admit that not everybody is in the same boat.

          • @x d: True.

I rent, and that 32A tail isn't an option for me so I didn't include it. There are a lot of accessories one can buy for an EV!

Leaving the car at a public Type 2 charger is just fine, at most it's done once a week. It really depends how an owner finds they must manage their charge schedule. I have an LFP battery in mine, so I can relax knowing that low and high SoC doesn't damage my battery - unlike the other variants. I run the distance between my rental and my charge location, and that's convenient for me for many reasons. It is not the same for other EV owners.

Security at most public charger installations is fine, eg. some universities have chargers in their carparks, which are under 24/7 surveillance with patrols, and are open to the public after outside of business hours.

      • Well, firstly $500 not spend is $500 saved for something else and == more Eneloop batteries

Second, I can now reconsider my transport options for work. e.g. $6.40 for buses vs. $12/day parking with free charging.

And finally, it offset the extra $20k on top of a equivalent ICE SUV

You need a Tesla with the house ;)

  • +1

A couple of Tesla Model 3 Performance owners live up the road from me.

The way they speed up to 50kmph in the small suburb streets is terrifying. I am just waiting for them to kill someone.

Please don't do the same thing.

I am not looking forward to 15 years time where everyone has an electric car doing 0-100 in 3 seconds with no Advanced Driver Training.
My 370z, MX5 and Cayman struggle to do 0-100 in 6 seconds without revving the piss out of them. Who knows, I will probably get rear ended in traffic daily due to being too slow.

    • Dont worry, the next OTA update will have pedastrian alert.

    • +1

You know I've been thinking the same…the speed which the EV are accelerating will bring all sorts of problems along with it

      • Especially with the way karen soccer mums drive

  • I follow TechAu and they just released this comprehensive write-up review. Read it if you are bothered, keen to hear what everyone thinks.

  • I have recently started quoting the insurance on these for my clients.

Be prepared, it's not cheap and not many insurers like them (yet).

Premiums might stabilise by the time you take delivery though.

    • FUD…
They are not any more expensive to insure.
I have been quoted similar amount to Audi S3

      • With which insurer?

        • AAMI.
Other insurers were slightly dearer but that was the same with my S3 anyway

          • @dji1111111: Oh ok. Good to know.
            Are you in nsw?

            • @imurgod: No, QLD

              • @dji1111111: Just checked, I'm still getting higher premiums in QLD too.
To be fair, similar premiums to an S3 which is considered a performance vehicle so the premium for that is high anyway.

                • @imurgod: My quote from AAMI was 1,069 with 1,200 excess

                  • @dji1111111: That is a really good premium and that's a fair excess too.

Am I the only one that test drove this and hated it? No dash, interior of a budget Kia, hard to see the speedo and generally poor feel to the build quality. Loved the fact it was an EV and great power but it felt way overpriced for what it was… just my opinion.

Yes. Drove a p90d a while ago. Much preferred the rs3.

But… Depreciation and the ozb in me…

      • +1

        I'm going for a Polestar 2.

        • Love their interior design and overall aesthetics. Too bad they dont make city cars as thats what am looking for.

        • what a terrible choice. might as well just get a XC40 Recharge lol
Either way, they are both built off ICE platform = rubbish
Terrible efficiency as well. If you hate Tesla that much, might as well just get a Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5/6

          • @dji1111111: Hmmmm, I think terrible is a bit much. Neither the Kia or the Hyundai offer the power, they are also a bit fugly.

The polestar has compromises but the interior quality, the Google O/S operating system & general look/feel seems much higher to me than the Tesla.

            • @Yorkshire-Man: You get more for your money with XC40 recharge anyway and they are virtually the same car. Polestar2 is pointless as long as XC40 Recharge exists

              • @dji1111111: Nah, design is very different & you cant get the duel motor in Australia until late 2023. Not an option right now!

        • They look great. PS3 looks insane but probably $125k

    • Best driving experience I've had so far… I loved the interactive display, lane assist and the power!!! We raced a Ferreri and left it well behind (with four passengers). Slowed dow around 150km…. Maybe the Ferrari would have beat us post 150km.

      Wish I could afford a Tesla…

Man ozbargain is really full of d***heads and trolls. The guy asked a genuine question and some of the answers are just fked.

      • -1

Are you trolling in the wrong country? Tesla automobiles LMAO
not sure how asking a question is considered trolling but I certainly think a person who has zero interest in Tesla and nothing to contribute to come here and abuse people for no reason would certainly be considered trolling and definitely would think there are some serious mental issues at play here

Sorry if anyone has already covered these off:

    1. If you do go ahead with a decent solar pv system (or plan to later), get a MyEnergi Zappi charger, has three charge modes; fast (up to 11kw if on 3-phase I think, or up to 7.2kw on single phase like I've got), eco (uses some solar being generated, and some mains), and eco+ which just uses exclusively excess solar, if there's more value on your power plan in using power generated vs selling it back to the grid.

    2. Go here at inspection time if you do indeed collect the car: https://teslaprep.glideapp.io/ interactive check list of crap to check when taking delivery of your new Tesla. If anything is way off, don't accept the delivery.

    3. Check out sellers like hansshow and Jowua for accessories if you want to go down that money pit rabbit hole. https://www.hautopart.com/
