New IKEA Billy Bookcase Colours Vs Old

Howdy all

Looking to add some Billy bookcase pieces (extenders/shelves) etc to our existing Black/Brown colour scheme for entertainment AV cabinet setup.

They have now changed the range with colours split to Black Oak and Dark Brown oak.

Anyone have any real-world experience with this dilemma… ie what looks the closest match / any one tried staining to match etc etc…

cheers

Take an old shelf in and compare it to the new colours? Are you sure it was a change in colour or just a change in name?

Check out second hand options on Gumtree, Facebook mp etc and see if you can purchase what you need as the old colours.

    • thanks but hard to find single add on pieces extenders/shelves

  • I found this myself as I wanted another of the brown ash and have seen the new colours in store. Black oak is somewhat similar to the old black brown so at a distance you may not notice but side by side and up close you definitely will (the wood grain effect is more pronounced). Oak effect is slightly darker than the old white stained oak and would be easily noticed as different in the same room and dark brown oak is significantly darker than the old brown ash.

I really wish Ikea would give more notice on their colour run outs. I'd literally bought one of the brown ash 2 weeks before the colour change and there was no mention of it.

Ikea does have a 365 day return on change of mind policy.

It depends on how "unused" the piece looks. Probably if it isn't too scuffed up.

      • It's not that big of an issue for me that I'd return it but yes, their return policy is great.

No probs, just giving you the heads up in case you wanted to get two matching ones. :)

    • cheers for reply..do you think dark brown oak with a thin coat of black stain would match the old Black/Brown ?

      • I really don't know, I'm not even sure how a stain would react as they're not real timber. If you want to experiment I'd suggest buying individual shelves, the narrow ones are only $10 IIRC, and use that as a test piece.
