Interesting design. I did wonder how effective the air gap is in practice. Although there is greater air flow and surface area because of the air gap, the fact that there is a gap at all also means that the coils will be less effective than they would otherwise have been. When a thick case can be the difference between charging or not, those extra couple of mm could be make or break.
