Smart Bulb and Battery Powered Switch

We recently moved to a house with light switch behind the doors. Reversing the doors or rewiring the switch to the correct side are not preferred due to the layout and space.

With this, we are thinking of using a smart bulb plus battery-powered smart switch instead. What's a cost-effective option for this set up? We don't need any other features aside from being able to turn on the lights as soon as you enter the room instead of having to go behind the door.

Thanks in advance to those who will respond!

  • I have smart bulbs all through my rented unit, and would love an option to have a physical switch to control them properly so am very interested to see what responses there are to this.

Philips Hue bulb to your liking and a wireless switch means you don't have to touch any wiring:

or alternatively, you can wire in a switch module behind it and fully control with app:

    • Thanks for this. I am assuming Googe Home or Alexa wouldn't be able to control the bulb?

Pretty sure you need the gateway as well which kinda kills the deal.

        • Guess it depends how much further you want to go with them. The bulbs and switches are still cheaper than Philips Hue

@spackbace: Yeelight have a Bluetooth controller that can be mounted and used as a switch.

But also as below, someone else has confirmed you don't need the gateway.

Still Yeelight is the cheapest option, albeit importing off AliExpress versus the (potential) convenience of sourcing locally from Ikea.

  • When I looked at it last time I can only find philips solution. I ended up putting google minis everywhere…

  • Yeah Ikea have a solution for this. Use one for a lamp.
    Works really well

    • Yeah this, but get the dial type controller, not the remote control looking one.
      The dial works every time.
The remote type I find needs to have the button pressed a few times to finally work.

      • The dial type controller seems to require wiring. Is that correct?

        • You can get a bluetooth version that runs off a coin cell battery.
The Yeelight Australia site is unclear which type they're selling. They've used images for both types!

Assuming you can afford to wait, buy off AliExpress for around $15.

If you're looking at a W3 Yeelight bulb, note that in my experience, you can only connect either a Smart Switch, or connect to WiFi, not both.

cost effective solution is Ikea. Buy bulb and switch that can control. You don't need a hub.

  • Thanks everyone for your responses!
