Bugger, should have checked with @MathNerd first.

  • +3

Solid prices/gear even if a bit older. 1080p screens, USB C on the lenovos and seems like the T470s has 4G as well.

$270 seems like a steal for the T470s

    • Bought one 470s

    • I just checked the age of my desktop CPU, 2017, and I can run every new game maxed at 1440p. Older tech still works fine with nothing pushing hardware much anymore.

      • +2

There is an ocean of software that pushes our tech to its limits. The problem is hardware is barely getting faster, and hasn't for a decade now. Sandybridge to Kabylake was basically one gen with almost no improvement, spun out to 6 "generations". Add in speculative execution "mitigations" and we're barely ahead from 10 years ago in single thread perf. The last 10 years of speed improvement would have been a year or so of progress (relatively) in the late 90s.

        • The "Pentium" years lol

    • +4

Much better to buy the one with the 8350u CPU. The performance difference and longevity is worth a lot more than the extra price.

      • Yeah probably true, just depends if it has the same connectivity you need.

    • Thanks, tagged one

@Bretttick: @Bretttick: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux. I'm so sick of big tech exploiting my personal data.

            • +1

@Dano33: Yeah I'm sick of windows starting from 8, apps not authorised by windows is a pia.

HP is a special type of computer just like when it comes to rooting Xiaomi. All these permissions etc. Hate it just let me do what I want to do.

Everyone talking gen 8 for win 11, win 11 can 🖕

            • +1

@Dano33: Should make the transition to Linux, it's a better time than ever. I found the the windows 10 user experience to be absolutely terrible in recent years. I personally have had way too many cases where the OS takes control away, and I'm faced with long windows updates on boot-up/shutdown; often times unsuccessful. My worse experience was when I accidentally activated some legacy abandonware (sync centre) that their support forum had barely knowledge on whereby their suggested fix was to 'simply' reset windows.

Nowadays, if I require a stable system that's only going to be used for light websurfing tasks - windows is definitely not my first choice. I find many older folks just simply love to click and install everything they see and have their system get bloated overtime. I already have and will continue to install Fedora Silverblue/Kinoite if I want something that's really easy to service/maintain/upgrade — If anything breaks due to a poor update or user misconfig, the user can just reverse to the previous state with one click at boot.

I highly suggest everyone should try out RHEL distros, like Fedora Workstation at least once, it's rock solid and performs great on most devices out of the box. Both intel and AMD has great driver support built into the kernel. For all the inconvenience, you get a way more robust filesystem. But it does require effort — ie. changing your workflow, and perhaps some time customising the distro to make the basic workflow similarly to windows. For those coming to Linux from Windows, I recommend downloading GnomeTweaks+GnomeExtensions+ArcMenu+DashToPanel for GNOME DEs; or you can simply use the less stable KDE. Furthermore, going Linux isn't even a downside anymore in recent years, if the machine has a dGPU - then you basically get best of all worlds, as you can game and run windows apps via VM without latency - check out /r/VFIO.

@Dano33 This is a heavily biased opinion after seeing you were going to try Linux Mint. Personally, I have not had too good of an experience with Ubuntu/Debian distros from an end-user standpt — it soiled my initial Linux experience a few years ago. I find their updates almost always breaks something (dependencies). It's not obvious initially, but once your LTS version nears EOL — the issues becomes more apparent, and I found eventually you simply just stop updating, and thus open your machine to potential vulnerabilities (The Win7 SP2 experience? :D).

        • Good price, I wonder how bad they are with "MEDIUM CASE SCRATCHES"

Shame the t490s doesn't have an ethernet port and the keyboard is not replaceable, also soldered ram

          • @jjsnacks: I messaged them asking about the scratches, still no response. for $415 after discount - maybe get a big sticker for it.

            • +1

@FiscalSleuth: I use it in the field so Ethernet is handy, dongles are ok but can get lost.

Keyboard is replaceable but a big job to fully disassemble the machine.

              Still a great price, tempted!

              • @jjsnacks: New message from: smg-au (5,008GREEN_STAR Star)
It's T490S, it may have few scratches here and there on external case that comes from normal usage, nothing major to worry about, no scratches on screen and keypad. It comes with 30 days money back warranty as well.
                Kind Regards

I had a T460s before and was very happy with it. Too bad all sold out now.

  • +4

I just bought a t480 for $280 last week. The laptop is basically brand new without a fingerprint on it. Added a 8GB of RAM for dual channel (Crucial, $40) and 1TB Nvme (Kingston A2000, $99). Now, I’m good to go with just ~$420.

    Really happy with it.

    • +5

Where did you pick that up from???

      • I got an offer from a local IT guy in Vic. He had around 3 T480s and 4 X390s (i7 8th gen, 16GB RAM, 256GB Nvme, a stylus, and a cover for ~$450 or less) when I picked mine up. I think he still has one or two last T480s or X390s for sale.
