Just a note this is the older 2.5 layer version and not the current 3layer. I've had two 2.5s and my current is a 3l. IMO the 3l is a big improvement.

    What does 2.5-layer mean?

Is there some sort of numbering system for jacket warmth ratings?

    • +2

Refers to the construction of the shell, in that it has the outer waterproof layer, an internal layer designed to protect the outerlayer, and a coating on the inner layer.
Have a look here for a simple write up:

Important to note that hardshells like this aren't going to be warm. They'll give you wind and water protection but there's essentially no insulation, you'd layer this over something insulating if you need warmth too.

      • How interesting. Sort of like an IP rating for jackets.

Do you know of a rating system like this for the warmth factor?

        • +1

Far from an expert on that, don't spend much time in alpine conditions so warmth isn't something I'm chasing much. I do know that down fill power is one characterstic that is rated for down jackets specifically, but it also isn't as simple as higher number = warmer garment.

Are you looking for a hard shell or an insulating jacket?

          • @Srey:

a hard shell or an insulating jacket?

            lol terminology overload.

Was just asking out of interest, I'm not in the market for a jacket. Loving my $99 Macpac Halo :)

            Thanks anyway :)

            • @andresampras: Haha, no worries. I have a halo as a daily beater in winter, it's awesome. Got a torrentshell earlier in the year as I needed a new hardshell for the wet weather. It's great for day to day urban wear, but I'd say it's on the heavy and bulky side as a packing option for me.

  • Only size XL available?.. I cant seem to select size.

    • same… whats available?

  • Womens XL fits like Mens M, just branded as women specific but fits the same
