What to Do if Your Tyres Are Slashed?

Hey all,

My wife was out on the weekend and had a small argument with someone who parked super close and didn't allow much room to manoeuvre the car.

On the drive home we got a flat tyre which after inspection looks like someone slashed the tyre (https://imgur.com/a/j15rJr4).

She has the rego number of the other person but it is speculation at this point.

My question is if there is anything to do with this information. Would you report it to the police or just move on?

Thanks

that looks like the thickest part of the tyre to slash…..
so either a dumb and strong person, or ran over a piece of tin etc
    .

Yeah that's a weird place to slash a tire.

    • maybe OP argued with a Samurai?

Samurai didn't give OP confirmation bias.

      OP here seeking confirmation bias.

  • if she was in a public place, see if there's CCTV footage, and then take it to the police (if there is)

but i would just leave it as likely nothing will come of it

    • On a CBD street next to gardens. Couldn't see any cameras on Google Maps

      • +4

Even if you found cameras, do you think you most people will hand over their footage for inspection to random strangers?

Report to the police and move on.

Hard to prove and may not have actually happened.

It’s unlikely to go anywhere, but you never know. The person may have a record for cheeky carpark antics.

    • +2

Thats what i was thinking. Don't expect a result but if this person has a history then it should be recorded for the next poor sucker.

      • +3

        It cant hurt.
If it was them - nothing will happen but theres a record.

If it wasn’t them - nothing will happen 🤷🏽‍♂️

        • +5

There will not be a 'record' as police won't take any report if the op attends a station and tells the above story … Wasting everyone's time

          • -3

@oscargamer: So it could go on for a lifetime? Would it still be a waste of time then? Sounds like the waste of time would be moreso due to shoddy recording and information processes.

            • +1

@cookie2: I said, if you care to read it, "if the op attends a station and tells the above story … "

You are now telling a different story…. But why let that spoil a good rant at the expense of the boys and girls in blue…..?

    • +6

      Literally won't get anywhere.
      It's all speculation.
Police will just nod and throw away any notes.

  • +17

This is why you shouldn't argue with anyone at carparks. It is just not worth it.

    • +13

Never ague with someone who has less to lose.

  • +6

Is it almost time to replace the tyre anyway?

Might have done you a favour there

    • Yes. Already booked in :)

  • +4

Tyre looks pretty end of life.

It'd be different if the sideway was slashed. This is too speculative.

Time to trawl for tyre and dash cam deals OP.

    • Yes. Already booked in for a change.

That isn't really a slashed tyre in my books, based on the straightness of the line and that fact its on the tread part etc, it looks like you ran over some metal or something on the way home. A tyre is hard work to get through, so they go the side walls which is the thinnest part. When you get this fixed, have a good at cutting your old tyre, you'll find its pretty hard to do and even harder to get a lovely straight line like that.

Correct, all speculation, nothing they can do even if you report it.

My question is if there is anything to do with this information. Would you report it to the police or just move on?

As you said, it's all speculation. It could have been that person, it could have been a piece of metal on the road (my guess) or it could have been some teenagers who did it at a later point.

Unless you have video/photos of them doing the act, there isn't much you can do. Get the tyre fixed. enjoy life.

That tyres fkn roast as it is.

  • +1

Not much can be done unless you have CCTV evidence. The tyre looks like it needs to be replaced soon. The shoulder is worn and there is a crack in the groove. Lesson learned. Don't argue with people who knows where you parked or live.

  • +8

Advise police who can issue you with an infringement notice for drive defective vehicle re: tyre tread depth

  • +5

It's unlikely that someone would try and slash it through the tread. It's an old tire, my money would be that it was caused by running over debris on the road.

  • +5

Could you even get into the wheel arch to slash the tread?

  • +1

If you had argument before you park it's better for you to move your car elsewhere.

  • +4

If someone slashed your tyre, you would've barely driven down the street before you would've noticed.

And if you were slashing tyres you'd go for the side wall anyway.

  • +1

That's not slashed, that's run over something.

    • On the drive home we got a flat tyre

      confirmed.

  • last time i slashed a tire it was through the side wall.
    who slashes a tire there?

  • +2

That's road damage to that tyre and not "slashed". It's old damage as well, as a recent cut would look a lot cleaner and not as worn out.

And, basically, unless you "saw" someone doing it or have an eye witness that saw them doing it, it is just that, "speculation" and police don't work on "speculation".

  • +1

Don’t bother reporting it. Buy new tyres.

No one slashes the tread. If they did slash a tyre it’d be flat immediately.

Note to wannabe slashers: stab, by slash. Slash is a recipe for the tyre ‘exploding’ as the last of the casing gives way and all the air rushes out potentially taking the knife (and your wrist) with it and possibly knocking you flat as well. If you stab, the air escapes around the knife more slowly as you wiggle it free.

    • Thanks! Is there a YouTube you can link me to? I just want to get my technique right before I go on my crime spree. Cheers.

  • Wouldn't they slash more than one tyre?

  • That does NOT look like a slashed tyre.

  • Road hazard cut. Try cutting a tyre, it isn't that easy. Time for new tyres.

  • Should replace other tyres so they wear evenly or at least the other pair opposite the slashed tyre as well.

  • Yeah nah didn't happen 😂. But nice try for an attention post. Maybe make it look a bit more believable next time.

  • Strange place to slash a tyre. Likely road damage I think. The tyre shop will be able to tell you when you pop in for new tyres. Absent a witness or video there is no real prospect of proving the other party was the person responsible if if the tyre is slashed. Time to just move on.

  • Title is misleading.

Your tyres weren't slashed. There is a steel belt (made up of lots of steel wires) running around the circumference of the tyre like a hoop, you can't 'slash' through it.

Back to the title error, you are attributing cause to something that is merely correlated.

    Move along.

  • yeah no one is gonna slash the tread, you slash the sidewall

what do you think the person was carrying to do that kind of damage??? maybe he was wolverine?

OP ran over something most likely near a construction site

  • That slash would have given you more traction in the wet, maybe they were trying to do you a favour?
