Purchasing Cologne/Perfume - Is Amazon AU Legitimate?

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying one of my favourite colognes which can be found for the following prices:

  • Myer $160
  • Chemist Warehouse $110
  • Amazon AU $120

I've read so many bad things about Chemist Warehouse and I'm also of the belief that my last purchase from there had been shelved for a while. I found the scent was slightly less strong than my original and the scent lasted for less time too.

I'm tempted by Amazon AU since most things by Amazon I would assume haven't been shelved for months or are at least more likely to be stored properly/not from the grey market. But I would like to not repeat the same mistake twice given the money. Amazon is also not listed as an official supplier on the brands website, although the brand does a lot more than just scents.

My concern - not whether it’s legitimate, but whether it’s old stock or a grey import.

Would you buy a cologne/perfume if it was sold and shipped directly by Amazon AU?

Products sold and shipped by Amazon are genuine & fresh. They often have discounts on fragrances.

Make sure you're comparing like for like though. There are different types of concentrations for each perfume. An Eau de Toilette is cheaper than Eau de Parfum..

    Chemist warehouse is fine.
    Have used them many times.

They are definitely legit, but they have been shelved for a while and usually sell items cheap because they're older clearance stock. Many threads on Ozbargain about it.

      • In some cases the older stock is better, pre-reformulation.
But agree i suspect it's largely grey imports.

  • They are legit. But I suspect with places like CW and Amazon that they spend a lot of time sitting around in a stinking hot warehouse which degrades the quality. Many times i've had chocolate delivered from Amazon with bloom all over it. And yes, the fragrances i've bought from there and CW always seem weaker than what is sold in Myer etc.

  • I've bought CK from Amazon (sold and shipped by Amazon AU) when on sale and it's definitely legit.

  • Ever since I read this article How To Avoid Dangerous Counterfeits On Amazon This Holiday Season on how real and fakes can be comingled in the amazon warehouse ive been wary of buying things on amazon that i want to be certain are genuine. Im sure theyve worked on the issues since this article was written but if i have another choice i prefer not to buy from amazon just in case.

  • Why not check with the perfume manufacturer on who is the authorised retailer.
Should be fine if they are a authorised retailer.

  • The key thing to check is that Amazon should be the seller & not a 3rd party seller.

I've had an issue in the past with a 3rd party seller on Amazon who sent me a pirated book. I was able to return it & get Amazon gave me a refund.

  • I recently bought Blue de Chanel from Myer which costs $200+

Only to realise it was manufactured in September 2021 (i.e. 12 months ago). Which was a bit disappointing.

Bought Mont Blanc from Amazon 125ml from Amazon and it was manufactured 6 months ago which I’m happy with. Same price as CW.
