Job Quota with or without Hourly Rate

This post is about plumbers over charged me bill.

My fault is, absolutely, not get quota before starting.

lesson learned and know a new way to make more $$ which is charging more if customers don’t ask a quota

You should ask for a quote before they do the work so there's no surprises.

Should do the job yourself if you don't want to pay or find someone else to do the job cheaper?

It worries me people can't do basic things like this this or even replace tap washers these days I'll always give it a go or even look on YouTube if I have troubles before I blow heaps on trades obviously anything complex with electrical I'll get someone in.

I reckon most people can ( they don’t post saying, I replaced own tap ), only those that can’t/don’t post here, it’s like no-insurance posts.

        • True these ones just winge on here how much it costs them for a call out on the weekend, always good for a laugh !

men used to be more handy, my grandfather is, my father is as well, though to a lesser degree, but he never taught me much and half the stuff that he did teach me (about cars) is just wrong.

i think fathers teaching their sons how to do basic handywork and maintenance is just not as common as it used to be, most peoples first instinct is to call a plumber, electrician, builder etc these days. my grandfather actually built his first house with his wife and he is not, nor was he ever a builder by trade.

of course that is not the only thing, but it's a large part of it. the way kids are raised has changed, as a result less people grow up with a self sufficient attitude, you can learn it yourself later in life, but most choose not to.

        • I think rules have something to do with it. You're not even allowed to change a tap, you need to get a licensed plumber to do it for you so most people will just go the safe route of pay for it to be done thinking it is too complicated for the home handyman. The reality is that once you have changed a tap you realise how simple it is to do yourself.

            @onetwothreefour:

You're not even allowed to change a tap

Link to this rule/law you believe exists?

The reason you don't do Plumbing and Electrical yourself is that you can void your house insurance. Unlicensed work also voids the warranty on the plumbing and electrical material you may have just installed. It's the case in WA anyway.

Always get a quote before starting.

His minimum callout rate might be 2.5 hours. Your fault for not getting a quote.

I never heard minimum 2.5 hrs charge. I hope u never have this ridiculous thing.

      • +1

Why shouldn’t there be a minimum charge? They have travel time and they, may, have turned down another job to do yours. A minimum call-out time is, not, uncommon.

        • -2

minimum charge should be reasonable. 2.5 hrs? Why not 25hrs ?

Never engage, order or use a service/product if you don’t know the full cost.

      • +2

I definitely do. In IT if you want me to do any work on a Sunday I book a minimum 4 hours.

It's very common with trades and the fact that you didn't know this says a lot about your problem.

could anyone suggest me if the way of tradies billing changed nowadays?

There's a reason they can afford 80 K utes while everyone else is tightening their belts

  • "could anyone suggest me if the way of tradies billing changed nowadays?"
Charge what the client likely has as available balance but just under what will get a visit from A Current Affair. ie. An electrician I hired to install a power point told me while onsite that he just charged a lady $500 for a replacement point.

There are a few bad bunches that spoil it for the one honest guy.

Bunnings offer some plumbing services now, should check out.

  • +4

but it only took him 40mins including the time of he buying new parts

He travelled to your house, discussed the issue with you, went and purchased the required hardware from the local plumbing supply store, returned to your house and completed installation ….all within 40mins?

If you can't fit your own tap, you should at least have the skillset to ask for an estimate or quote before engaging the tradie. If the resulting price is outside this ball park you at least have an avenue for discussion or bill dispute.

Requests a job to be done without getting a quote the. Complains about the price?

Im surprised the plumber gave you a price breakdown that didn’t match what he did. Seems more along the lines of you pestered him and he took $100 off to shut you up and be done with you.

  • could anyone suggest me if the way of tradies billing changed nowadays?

Do they not provide quotes these days?

Highly recommended these guysif you want a $200 mixer tap installed for $1200+gst apparently their app doesn't allow them to generate itemised breakdowns 🤔

  • I replaced one kitchen mixer and one toilet tap myself. Very straight forward but it does take a little time and one particular tool you will need.

I see some old video which they even need to replace the entire sink, but good thing only need to do the tap.
