How to Look after a Spa While I Decide to Keep or Not

Hey all,

I recently purchased a home that has a spa. I don’t have any interest in using it in the short term. I would say it is too early to decide if I want it long term or not, so I don’t want to get rid of it until I’m sure. But it’s fair to say at this point, the idea is to not use it but also not ruin its condition. If anything, the only time I could think of using it in the near future is in summer for a nice refreshing dip. I am aware of the idea of ph testing etc if I did want to use it. But if I know that I might not use it for the next 6-12 months (or maybe never) what is my best option for keeping holding costs at its lowest and also reducing maintenance effort given it may never have any benefit? Note it does have a cover. Is it best to simply empty it? Or utilise some very cheap ph testing?

in summer for a nice refreshing dip.

I use my spa heaps more in winter. It's one of the best places to meet up and have a drink with a friend, or just to sit in and debrief with my wife, or go alone and put the phone in a zip lock bag and scroll ozbargain. (Mines outdoor, not sure if the dynamic would be the same with an indoor).

If you're not using it just empty it and keep the cover on.

Why not sell the house and buy one without Spa? lol

  • Rent it out to certain groups to help with holding costs..not sure what impact that may have on pH levels though 🤔

Invite your friends over and use it. I guarantee as soon as you get rid of it your friends will tell you they wished you invited them over for boozy parties in your spa. It's freezing cold right now and a hot spa sounds perfect.

Unplug it. Empty it. Clean up any remaining water and get it nice and dry. Put the cover back on and job done.

Might as well buy new filters for it too - measure up the current ones and get some generic ones off of eBay.

  • Use it! Have you not seen Hot Tub Time Machine?

  • Winter is the best time to use a spa.

  • We bought a house with a spa with no intention of using it. First thing we did was get it serviced to see if it was actually working. Then bought a hard cover, and left it alone for about a year.

Ending up selling it for a few hundred (to a landscape gardener), and the guy came to remove it and fix up the huge hole in the ground

    Keys in the bowl too?

  • Bought our house in 2017 with an outdoor spa and have never used it lol. We drained it, doesn't take that long to fill up with a garden hose anyway. Don't want stagnant water just sitting in there.
