Genuine question. How much better is this one compare with the Yamaha ATS-2090B which often go under $300 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/702926
I currently have the Yamaha ATS-1080. Would I notice a big difference with these? Or should I just get a sub instead?
The inclusion of a dedicated centre channel would probably be the biggest difference (ie. clearer dialogue, I find myself switching on subtitles on the ATS-1080 more than I'd like)

I think the Gen 2 is largely just a new CPU which is mainly for future proofing it a bit more. There might be a couple of tiny changes here and there but nothing to trade up for I reckon (I think "colour matched power cord" was one of them …)
It does have a polycarbonate grill like the Arc. It also has Atmos…but no upfiring speakers. I would say don't upgrade. Although you could buy one and use the old in another room.
no upfiring speakers is essentially no atmos, just only able to process and outpt atmos signal for marketing purposes.
You'd have to get rear speakers if you want surround with this. Probably the Sonos compatible ones from IKEA are a good option
I had a gen1 and now have a gen2. Just stick with what you have imo.

They sound a lot better with the sub but the sub Costs more than the sound bar
Sadly, yes.
However, a smaller, less expensive one that may be a better match for the Beams may soon be a reality.
