It's Been over 2 Months since My eBay Gift Card Balance Disappeared after a Transaction Didn't Go through - What Can I Do?

So back in May, I was paying for an item with partial gift card/card, and it said to please try pay again - however the gift card balance dropped to $0.

It's been over 2 months, and the balance is still $0. I've spoken to multiple eBay 'support' staff via live chat, who all assure me that it's being looked into blah blah - yet, nothing has changed.

I've heard of this happening before, just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and managed to find a way to escalate it with eBay?

Ridiculous!

  • Maybe the seller got paid and is stooging you?

  • Probably should have gotten back on the live chat, but to be honest they are pretty useless nowadays and give conflicting information.

    Try re-enter it. Worked for me.

    • Lol, have tried this…

      • Dang. Contact CS and have some strong alcohol on hand.

  • Just had this happen to me, they said it would be refunded within 21 days. Are you still waiting OP?

      RIP.

      After 5 failed attempts with eBay live chat, it happened again with $800 worth of gift cards.

      At this point, I lost it, and sent a very strongly worded message to eBay on Facebook via Messenger. They have actually been very efficient and helpful - had the gift card balance back within 24 hours, but then it happened again.

      After getting the balance back for a second time, the transaction finally went through. There are still some funds missing, but it's only a few dollars, and they're working on it.

      It would appear that eBay Facebook support is a level above the regular live chat, as things actually get done.

      Let me know how you go - good luck!

      • Thanks mate, will try FB support as well. Good to hear it's pretty much sorted for you. Don't think I'll be using eBay gift cards again.

          Looking back at older threads online, this issue goes back some 2+ years, which is insane if you think about it for such a large company.

          Did you also use them to buy something from overseas?
          That, and buying an item with an accepted best offer, seems to cause this to happen…

          • @Uncle Roger: Yeah $300 worth of cards, used to buy something from Japan in USD.

              @Dave Bowman: Checks out.

              Good luck with getting them back!

              • @Uncle Roger: The cards are now blocked and they need to see proof of purchase lol. Annoying because I bought them off someone here.

                • @Dave Bowman: What does that mean? They should be able to check from the numbers

                  • @Uncle Roger: I guess they think I'm a scammer or stole the gift cards.

                    • @Dave Bowman: Did you have any luck with these?

                      Also, did you try use ShopBack for the purchase? Trying to establish if there's a connection…

                      • @Uncle Roger: No luck yet, they said I'll have my gift cards back in 72 hours (by tomorrow night). No shopback. I think contacting them on FB flagged the security issue at their end. Will let you know when/if I get the cards back.

                      • @Uncle Roger: It's now been 21 days without the cards being returned (max time stated by eBay support). I've filed a complaint with fair trading.

                          @Dave Bowman: Good luck mate!

                          There's definitely an issue buying overseas items using gift cards (perhaps with a best offer accepted).

                          I had the same thing three times.

                            @Uncle Roger: I finally got the cards back after fair trading contacted them. Took a while, but it's done.

                            eBay have advised the gift vouchers have now been reinstated to your account to fulfil their responsibilities under the Australian Consumer Law.

                            If this happens to anyone else, just go straight to fair trading and ignore their requests to upload gift card screen shots etc.
