Please Recommend Me an Outdoor Gas BBQ Grill

Hi guys
I'm in need of a bbq. Thought now is a good time to purchase one ahead of summer.

I've never owned one before so am keen to get recommendations and reviews. Here is what I suspect I need:

  1. Gas powered. Don't like to fiddle with charcoal and hot spots etc etc
  2. I think I would want a lid for the "oven" effect. Though I think thats not a "must have"
  3. Must come with a cover, or at least, easy to get one for it. I don't expect to use it much. Maybe 5-6 times a year to be honest. Tempareture gauge would be nice?
  4. Hoping for a nice big flat grill section so we can get nice grill marks with multiple zones so we can only heat 1/4 or 1/2 the bbq at a time.
  5. and then also a flame burner on the side for sauces/gravy?

If you think any of these features is redundant, please do suggest.

I wouldn't like to spend a lot because I don't think I'll use it much. Are the "no frills" Bunnings jumbucks any good?

Thanks a lot

Weber Q. Various sizes to suit your preference.

    • Only problem with this is no zones. Similar thing with zones would be zeigler and brown. Weber has more even heat distribution though.

      • Never had the need. The Family Q you can use the central burner and move stuff to the outside edges as required, or just use a cheap roasting pan and rack for basic roasting.

If you do a lot of long indirect roasting, better off buying a smoker.

        • I've found it's a bit of a pain for a couple of things, but manageable. Preferred the Ziggy for two different direct heat zones, buy it was nowhere near as well distributed heat wise.

  • Would also recommend a Weber Q. We just upgraded from a Q to a Family Q. Nothing wrong with the Q, we just have a larger family now. Thing has been with us over 15 years and never missed a beat. And we're terrible at looking after it too.

  • I would suggest as you have never had one before I would grab a cheapish ($50 to $100) from Gumtree to see if it you will use it allot and learn how to cook on it. After summer you can then if you do not like it or want more/different features buy a way more expensive one $500 to $1000.

In Sydney you can get free gas BBQ's on gumtree. But you may need a new gas bottle or if it comes with one that is out of date then swap it at Bunnings for a swap and go one that you can then refill in allot of places cheaper than using the swap and go process.

  • Webber Q …. can retrofit temp gauge for around $15, have found they have burning issues if exposed to strong winds, had to make a baffle for the ends!.

    • Got a link to a kit? I'm assuming you have to drill a hole and it is installed like the factory version?

Just buy a short spike temp guage from the likes of AliExpress - $8-10 drill the lid and make a pair of silicone washers and fit together - easy and works well.

The probe length I have is around 50mm, it's important to find the shortest available … they are out there.

        • Excellent, thanks for the details. Off to aliexpress to see what I can find!

Are the "no frills" Bunnings jumbucks any good?

Yep, no issues with mine (and use it once a week or so). Reckon it will be fine for your use case, just get the 4 burner with the wok/side thing. I bought a cover for it from Bunnings for maybe $15-20.

  • Thanks guys. Looking at Weber but I'm not sure about natural gas vs lpg?

I wish to use the gas bottles from Bunnings! Which is that? Haha

      LPG

    • but I'm not sure about natural gas vs lpg?

Natural gas hooks up to your piped 'mains' gas line, while lpg connects to bottled gas.

So unless you have a gas plug outside, you'll want the lpg version.

      • Thankyou that helps!

    • Do you know what a natural gas connector is?

      • I don't know what a natural gas connector is…

but I don't have a natural gas line in my backyard so I will stick to LPG

    • So you didn’t want zones or a side burner. Or a flat grill for say onions eggs what ever, without having to buy expensive Weber extras.

    • If the cost bothers you, have a look around online for people selling them. We picked ourselves up a Family Q in decent nick for a decent amount less than retail.

  • Loved my Weber baby w for a month, grilled 4 times a week minimum. Over it now. Too much effort

Meaning that you paid about $80 per use. Not bad in the grand scheme of things.

Many pay much for their exercise bikes usually gets used only once.

      • My exercise bike definitely owes me nothing , easily clocked up 500 hrs + between me and the misso .

Bbq will get more use with summer coming soon again

          Excellent.

My exercise bike was $40 second hand. got it right when covid was starting in March 2020. Have been used daily for minimum of 30 minutes since. I am surprised it's still going. York seems to be a reliable brand!!

  • Hey guys
Came across this one and thinking of locking it in tonight

    Any thoughts?

    • It's like the worst of both bbq styles in one :)

    • If you bought this then can you please provide your review

      • Just bought it but don't intend to use and or unpack for at least 1 month tech

Looks really good actually. I would love to have both gas and coal options when I feel like it.
