Laphroaig 10 Year Old is an all-malt Scotch Whisky from the remote island of Islay in the Western Isles of Scotland. Laphroaig, pronounced "La-froyg", is a Gaelic word meaning "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay".

In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour.

Laphroaig is best savoured neat, or with a little cool water. Roll it around on your tongue. Release the pungent, earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley, the delicate heathery perfume of Islay's streams. It is as unique as the island itself.

Laphroaig (La-froyg) is the story of a community. An uncompromising, tough and determined group of people who work to ensure that this defining whisky has always remained true to its origins. These origins can be found in Islay itself - its harsh climate and tough landscape have created a hardy people whose single-mindedness and honesty is as distinctive as Laphroaig.

Take it neat or with a splash of soft water. Roll it around on your tongue. Release the pungent, earthy aroma of the blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley and the delicate, heathery perfume of Islay's streams. Like the islanders it may seem a little aloof at first, but make the effort, broach acquaintance and we can guarantee you'll have a warm and genuine friend for life.

  • Laphroaig usually retails around the $80 mark at dans/1st choice…

how could a 10 year old scotch have won an award in 1998? that's like saying my 18 year old girlfriend was born in 1999

    • +6

10 years is the amount of time it spent in the barrel. Whisky ceases to age once you bottle it. A 10yo whisky can spend another 40 years in a bottle, and still be technically a 10 year old when you open it.

Also Laphroaig has been producing 10yo expressions of their malt for a pretty long time.. Since long before 1998.

10 years from when it was put in the barrel (i.e. 1988 or before). Not that these bottles are the same batch obviously…

      I don't know why you got down-voted, I had a chuckle

Not sure why this is so expensive in Oz. Laphroaig is always way cheaper than Lagavulin 16 year old in the UK (normally 30 GBP vs 45 GBP).

Yet both Laphroaig and Lagavulin retail for about $80 in AUS. I'm confused - does is cost more to ship the Laphroaig :-). I would expect this to retail for about $50 as you can get it for as little as 24.50 GBP

blah blah, market forces, blah blah, tyrany of distance, blah blah, mutually exclusive synergies of divergent brand values in the existant product landscape, blah blah

      • I love everything about this comment right down to the typos.

I need to write exactly this in an email so badly right now

        • glad to be of service :P

  • I first tried this when my wife looked for a gift and found Lagavulin unavailable. If you like one, you'll like the other.

At the time here in Brisbane, Lagavulin was the cheaper of the two. Personally, I'd buy one or the other based on price. Both splendid drops - be sure to keep any Coke bottles at least 25 metres away.

  • How has no one negged this yet when the normal price is $80 (from above comment and I remember it being $80 too)?

    • Free delivery to your door?

      • lol do OzBargainers really care about delivery when you can go to a local store and get it for cheaper? Petrol costs? Hahaha

    • Meh. Neg if you want, as you said it's not a bargain really.
Personally I save negs for when something is really amiss or they used RRP in the title.
