  • Reminds me of 'Actifed CC' when i was a kid

  • is this good for a beginner? i've been trying to like whiskey / whisky, but in spite of my Scottish blood, it all just tastes like petrol to me, though lagavulin tastes like petrol mixed with sea water.

    • +7

This tastes like petrol mixed with vanilla and sugar…..

      • wonderful..

    • Did you actually drink petrol with or without sea water ? Try with Coke next time.

      • not a fan of mixing whiskey with coke, if i'm just drinking to get drunk i can get drunk faster on vodka, i'm trying to acquire the taste that many people seem to have for whiskey

    • This stuff is revolting

    • It’s metho with added sugar

    • It’s sweet and easy to drink with coke or lemonade.

    • +1

Well each time I drink this I gag and want to vomit but I suspect this partly as a result of my late teen years getting overly pissed on it once. I have no such affliction to Scotch/Whisky despite drinking it at greater quantity. At any rate I will not touch Sothern Comfort anymore.

      • So many people have horror stories of southern comfort

        • For me it was then-$30 Tovaritch Russian Vodka.

    • Southern Comfort is a Whiskey Liquer rather than an actual Whiskey so in a lot of ways I would say no it isn't really going to help you like whiskey, though it has been the extra half step some have needed to make the jump.
What whiskey have you tried so far? Could be you aren't a fan of whiskey or maybe you just haven't found the right type yet eg. irish/scotch/canadian
My bottle of cult status Ardbeg 10 sits largely untouched because it proved not to be for me, I have however been enjoying very much my bottle of Jameson that many people would turn their noses up at.

      • i've tried

        lagavulin 9 year old

        johnny walker red label

        (bourbon) buffalo trace

        jameson irish whiskey

and something my grandfather gave me at his house, not entirely sure what it was but i think he said it was cheap

of all these, i have preferred the jameson & buffalo trace the most, and yes, i saw the snobbery about jameson

        • -1

          Try dewars

        • It doesn't get much better than Lagavulin really.. so if you don't like that, you're probably not a Scotch (drink) person.
You might like this American drink on special, as it's v sweet, with not much of a flavour profile.. kinda opposite Lagavulin… so it might just be your flavour.. as the two you mentioned liking on the above list, are the sweeter of the group there.. try it out

          • @darkmoss: it's looking more and more like it.

they are sweet? they don't taste sweet

            • @[Deactivated]: They're relatively sweet compared to the scotch whiskys.. you'd notice more when tasting them side by side (or you could google the tasting notes).
… so if you didn't like the rather expensive and much loved scotch, Lagavulin, though liked the Irish and Bourbon… Southern Comfort might be your go.
It's on the sweeeeet side, though can be dulled down with soda /ice / whatever floats yr boat?

        • Try 'Monkey Shoulder' ~$50-55 & a great drop for the price.

Jameson is a fave of mine also. I wouldn't generally spend over $60 on a bottle for mixing & not a huge fan of straight.

        • I am not Scottish but I married a wee lassie and all her brood only drinks whisky, single malt, so I am a beginner expert on whisky. I was going to suggest some peaty, west-side whisky but if you only want vodka then maybe not.

Maybe try some Japanese (overpriced) one, I found them too perfume, catered for Asian taste (nothing wrong with asian taste or whatever, I should know as I am one of them).

    • my Scottish blood

      Lol

    • This isn't whiskey, it's really a liqueur. Most people start off drinking southern comfort, will end up drinking way too much, and develop an aversion to it after making themselves sick.

It's an easy drink either with ice or mixed with softdrink. Also try Frangelico (IMO much nicer), also $35 at Dan Murphy currently

      • first time i threw up due to alcohol was with jameson, but it's still Scotch that makes me want to throw up for some reason.

Frangelico is nice, especially in an affogato, thanks for the tip

    • I have never really enjoyed a strong alcohol taste but Southern Comfort appeals to me because, genuinely, it tastes like the Demazin I had as a child.

I was in a similar boat and tried a lot of different whiskeys. I would read reviews that outlined the flavour, but it all tasted much the same. I found that for the most part, scotch whiskey isnt for me. Tullamor dew (Irish) stood out as a softer, more freindly whiskey and some of the american whiskeys had more personality, but In the end I moved to rum or gin and never looked back. To my taste, they have more variety of flavour and relies less on subtle 'hints' (which I could rarely detect).

      • i am inclined to agree with you, there's this guy on youtube (big clives brother ralphy) who i enjoy watching, but i could not see how he was getting all these different notes, i'm not convinced that it's not a placebo effect and they aren't just imagining all these "hints" of flavour, especially because they all seem to be getting different flavours from the same whiskeys / whiskys.

ironically, Irish whiskey used to be more "premium" than Scotch because of how refined and palatable it was in comparison, but now for the same reason Scotch is more premium.

I do like gin and rum, maybe i'll just give up on whisky. thanks for the advice

  • delicious

  • Any other decent whiskey? Not smokey

  • +7

This is as much a whiskey as Fanta is a fruit juice.

    • Fanta is 2% fruit juice 😅

  • Does Amazon purposefully delay delivery of alchohol? I've noticed it's always minimum 2 or 3 days away even in metro VIC.

  • Too sweet for me.

  • Sweet!
