  • Spend $7 extra and buy the faster, pro version

    • +2

I don't need the faster pro version. My camera records 4k at 200mbps maximum, which this card handles just fine.

      • It certainly helps when you have to transfer files around.

      R/W
      Ultra: 120MBps / 70MBps
      Extreme: 190MBps / 130MBps
      Extreme Pro: 200MBps / 140MBps

      Ignore any numbers above 98MBps.

Extreme (not Extreme Pro) is the best value, IMO

      • Are these RRP bs?
These are max seq speeds, I wonder if diff ver slow down on random r/w more than others.
Thinking of using one as external storage for my laptop

        • I'm not sure what the recommended retail price has to do with anything.

Those are sustained, normal writes (like you would get from video footage). The few tests I've seen have shown them to be similar (I think within 20MBps?)
For random RW, yeah, they all go down a lot. Ultra, of course, the most.

Laptop storage: as long as it is just for storage, like dumping movies and backups to, they're all fine.

Any 10Gbps SSD should be getting you about 700Mbps and up speeds, so I'd suggest considering that if you want to actually "use" it. For size and price, these are pretty good, it is true.

      • Where did you get those numbers?

        Extreme says 160/90 MB/s

    Should I buy another one?

    Yes

  • Good for switch?

    • +1

EDIT: Having a look at this page seems like it will be suitable.

      Switch guidelines suggest:
*microSDXC (64 GB and above) - check
      *USH-I compatiable - check
*Transfer speed 60 - 95 MB/sec (the higher the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch) - check

      • So the pro version would be even better? Or is the switch capped at loading games at a certain speed?

        • +1

I'm a n00b at this so literally just reading the specs, so cannot answer that question.

But just from general knowledge, I guess it would be would any speed increase be noticeable enough to justify the price difference. I guess this is already higher than the Nintendo recommendations, so I'm happy to just go with this.

        • -1

Higher speed should have faster load times, this will still be faster than a cartridge

        • +7

Switch microSD reader is capped - red & grey sandisk ultras are the best bang for buck for the switch, and anything better will have trivial to no gains in loading times. (Found some youtube videos that confirm this)

I just grabbed the 128Gb one for mine.

        • I've personally used the 200gb, this one and have a 400gb sandisk in mine atm. There all fine. No need for the pro version for the switch.

        • There's Ultra, Extreme, then Extreme Pro. The Pro is the same speed as the Extreme, except in specific devices, and then it's maybe 10% faster.

The Extreme is definitely faster than the Ultra.

      • Was about to attempt to use a SDCard for an old school Wii. Any issues for that?

        • I actually have one of these on my Wii and Wii U as well. Again no issues with either.

  • Not fast enough for video capture on my Insta360 One X2 or my DJI Mini 3 Pro drone. Need Sandisk Extreme or Samsung Evo Plus.

    • I think it should work fine, because the Insta360 One X2 records at 100mbps and the DJI Mini 3 Pro records at 150mbps. My camera records video at 200mbps, and I've used this card for continuous recording without any issues. If you can accept the very small risk of losing footage you can save some money buying a cheaper card that works.

I've used these cards before in GoPro's and they die (or more accurately, start having problems) after about 9 months. Get Extreme/Pro or Samsung Evo cards.

    • +3

I would much rather get the Samsung for $38.99. U3 vs U1 write speeds.

The Sandisk Extreme 256GB is U3, and $39.99 on sale today https://www.amazon.com.au/Sandisk-SDSQXA1-256G-GN6MA-Extreme…

(I notice its confusing that the 32GB and 64GB versions of the Sandisk Extreme are U1/A1 speed, and the 128GB+ are U3/A2 speed).

        • Hmm Samsung Evo Plus or the Samsung Extreme 256GB? Both are ~$39.

          • +1

            @xdigger: Samsung Evo Plus.
Oddly, it seems to have better compatibility with constant writing things, like dashcam or drone recording.

Cheapest it has been is $29, according to Camelizer, on 10 Dec, 2021.

How would this work with a phone. I want to upgrade the memory of my s20 ultra. The last of the mempry upgradable samsung phones.

    • +2

you turn off your phone, open the tray, put the card in, close the tray and then turn your phone on. Pretty simple.

      • -2

Thanks. I should have been more clear. I meant is it suitable for phones.
