If you only do spoken word, want an upgrade and you don't know what XLR is, buy this microphone. Never use it as an XLR mic.
I know it's got USB functionality but why not use it as an XLR with an audio interface?
Because it's poorly wired for it. There's a lot of comparisons on YouTube that demonstrate this.
XLR is a cleaner cable than USB, but if you optimise the mic internals for the USB ADC, and throw in XLR as an afterthought and it has line noise and uncontrolled tonality, that goes straight through the cable into your interface.
The Shure MV7X exists, but it remains the inferior mic for spoken word.
Cheers! Any thoughts or recommendations on an XLR (condenser or dynamic)? Been using an el cheapo BM-800 with a Scarlett interface for a long time now and would like a bit of an upgrade but nothing that'll break the bank :)
Maybe something I could even just look out for deals in future
@Castcore: Budget? Use case?
@jasswolf: Budget: $300 max
Use case: Primarily voice (talking), occassional trombone recording.@Castcore: Condenser:
- Takstar TAK55 ($120ish after cashbacks, AliExpress, Studio style mic)
- Mackie EM-91c ($90ish on Amazon, dark treble, great for spoken word at the price)
Dynamic:
- Electro Voice ND76
- Audix OM2
- Sennheiser E835
- SE Electronics V7
- Lewitt MTP250 DM
- Shure SM58-LC (no cable version)
Those are all good spoken word options, you can compare them for trombone samples on YouTube I assume. Most of them will have best price on Amazon, with maybe the Sennheiser having deals locally.
If you can stretch further, look into the sE Dynacaster and the Shure SM7B.
@jasswolf: Legend, thanks :)
any opinions on the behringer xm8500? $34 delivered and difference to the SM7b….price difference is massive for what it is (taken from another ozb comment):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jsWCJvOK8EI have one, it's a great set and forget option for spoken word on a budget. Can ever start with a USB-to-XLR cable and do OK.
Some people use it as a budget stage mic too, as it's well tuned. The MV7 is more detailed than the XM8500 though, has a nice software suite, and in this case would only cost $50-$60 more than the price of getting a decent interface for the XM8500.
think i've gone down a rabbit hole, now looking behringer um2 for $59 + Rode podmic for around $129 which would put it slightly more expensive than just the MV7 but more versatile?
@piejustice: Not really, no. It's a notably tinny sounding mic for most applications
Grab at least a UMC22, but look at mics like the Sennheiser E835 and the Shure SM58, not to mention the Takstar TAK55 If you want to not versatile gear.
I have an XM8500, If it's on a boom and has a pop filter it's great for the price, however it suffers terribly from handling noise if you want to use it as a handheld
Got one thanks! Wish it was black but don't mind the saving - Paired with a $51 Rode PSA 1
Keep an eye on that PSA1 order, listing may be fake.
Thanks.. I went to order history and it says shipped and sold by Amazon AU. Thought it is showing at $127 now and next day delivery, mine is in 1-2 weeks.
The mv7x is a bit cheaper and black if you have an audio interface
If you have an interface, there's better ways to spend the money in either case.
What do you recommend instead? Looking for a dynamic XLR for voice only, I have a Scarlett 2i2. I was eyeing off the MV7X but if there's something better for the price I'll shop around.
@vakarian32: Electro Voice ND76
Audix OM2
Sennheiser E835
sE Electronics V7
Lewitt MTP250 DMStepping up beyond that, you've got the sE Dynacaster at $430 when prices are good.
@jasswolf: Sorry didn't see your comment above where you already listed those. Cheers, I'll check them out.
Looking for a dynamic XLR for voice only
Electro-Voice RE20 for a cracking $480. (It's used by some of the best in the business)
Not sure if you can cancel the order but the black is now the same price. Maybe speak to customer support?
Thanks, just cancelled my order for the silver.
The MV7X (XLR) black is on special too for $159. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B09BZZCGC8/ref=sspa_mw_det…
Going for this, my v67g isn’t great for my use case so might as well
I'm looking for a mic that won't pickup noise when people are walking by or talking next to me. Would this mic by itself work?
From personal experience, most likely yes. You have to be quite close to this thing for the sound to be picked up, so I've had no issues with background noise at all since I bought mine. My old Blue Yeti picked up every little sound around me, but this has been much better.
Thanks so much! Yep I had a blue yeti and had to stop using it as it was picking up every sound around me too!
I know that pain, it was a nice mic but atrocious for background noise!
Having the gain low down and talking loudly might help
any dynamic microphones would be fine.
And also as long as the ratio between the microphone-your mouth < the microphone-the noise source, your voice will most likely be louder than the noise unless the noise source is that machine digging tunnel underneath the west gate.sounds like you previously had a condenser mic, Those always seem to pick up the whole damn house, even emergency services going pass will pick up
hello the black one is 179 now, update it.
Got the black. Been waiting for awhile. Thanks OP!
Same here. :)
Awesome! just got one! Any recommendations for a boom arm for it?
Rode PSA1
Brateck MDS06-1
NOTE: The Black variant of this model is now also available for the sale price.
Was tempted to get the silver one but wasn't too big of a fan of its aesthetic on the desk. So once they dropped the price of the black variant it was an instant buy.
I picked up a black one last year, it's a bit on the quiet side due to the nature of it being a dynamic microphone, but it's super clear and an easily noticeable upgrade for listening compared to what most people have.
Recommend people couple this with a boom arm to keep it close to your mouth but not in your way.
