    V10 ?

      yes, it's 10th gen

  • This vs paperwhite

    • PPI is very low vs the paperwhite

    • +1

I much prefer being cheap, but in this instance you just have to get the paperwhite on 30% discount instead for $167

    • Everything I have read leans towards the paperwhite being better value especially if you want to read anything with images or small text because its 167ppi versus 300ppi.

Same size storage, both have front lights, however the paperwhite gives you the option to change the page colours as well instead of the one colour that the basic does.

I was leaning to the basic due to cost but since I want to read some stuff with images its gotta be the paperwhite.

But if you want just a basic text reader that links to your amazon account get the basic.

Apparently manga reads better than comic on the paperwhite, and both aren't great on the basic due to the screen size (6" vs 6.8").

      • +1

If your main usage is manga though, and price is non-factor, iPad is probably better due to bigger screen size. I don't want to read manga on 6" screen. I prefer Kindle for novel only

        • -1

Manga apparently works well on the 6.8" screen due to the size of manga pages in real life, but its not great for comics.

Plus paperwhite will be about $148ish if you use cashrewards and get their 14% in the first 2 hours of Prime Day. Can you get an ipad anywhere for $148?

          • +1

@TrafalgarSean: Just comparing the usage, not the price. There are many of us that already have iPad, Samsung or other tablet too, and I found they're better as manga reader. Maybe just a matter of preference though.

For those who use ereaders, would you say there is a vast difference (besides battery life) compared to just using a tablet or smart phone?

    • +4

Tablet or phone hurts your eyes especially if you are reading in the dark.

Reading in bright sunlight with your phone or tablet is almost not possible in bright sunlight.

      • set the background to black and the text colour to white or cyan and you don't have the first problem

    • yep. much nicer experience. for this price, worth it

    • +1

Absolutely. You take for granted the lighting of the screen (both in the dark and in the sun).

The battery life is excellent also.

It's a niche one-use object, but it does that obviously better than anything else out there. YMMV.

Had various ones for about a decade now and couldn't live without them.

Note. I read novels, no manga/anime/PDFs

  • Get the paperwhite. It's far better

  • does anyone know if this charges via usb-c like the paperwhite ?

    • No it doesn’t

  • +4

I’ve got this and it’s slow and laggy as and pixelly. Anyone know if the new paperwhite is going to be a lot faster?

  • +4

It's a shame Amazon still sells this and doesn't make the paperwhite as the lowest model.

    • +1

Then it woudl be a shame that the point of entry for ereaders is 169 on a good day, don't you think?

      • -1

this one is almost useless my friend. it kinda defeats the purpose. there is a massive difference between this model and paperwhite.

        • +1

I am sure there is, but since I still use a kobo mini, which is probably the most complained about re: screen, I think it's still useful and has a place

Just looked it up, and both report 167ppi and 800x600, but somehow the kobo mini is only 5" where the kindle is 6". Not sure how that works, maybe one site is misreporting

          • +1

@Jackson: I loved my mini thanks to the size. Perfectly fine to read a novel on too. No backlight was my only complaint to upgrade really.

            • @Thiefsie: Yeah, and while my eyesight isn't what it used to be, I can increase the size of the font but then there's too many page turns and it gets annoying. Still I am getting by atm by just having a bit more light around, or using a clip on book light

  • I'm keeping my eye out for the chance that JB Hi-fi does a price match so I can use my second $10 voucher they sent me.

    • Go in store, office works have the same price so they’ll price match 💯

  • If you're looking at the (more expensive) Paperwhite here's a non-Amazon alternative, also on special at the moment. Kobo Libra 2. Both these more expensive options are waterproof.

I have a Sony prs-t1 that I bought for $150 about 11 years ago. It weighs the same as this, it has the same pixel density, has wifi etc. Still works perfectly, it's touchscreen but also has physical buttons. The Sony lets me use epub files too. Just no backlight, but this kindle has the crap white backlight, not an eye friendly warm light.

And they dare to call this 10th generation?
