Where to Buy Japanese Imported 'Strong Zero' or Other Varieties?

In Australia we have -196 which is basically a 6% alcohol variant made for the Australian market, but it is slightly different to the Japanese strong zero at 9%.

I know that online you can buy them for ridiculous prices but I'm wondering if there are any Asian markets or chains that sell it for cheaper? Would really like to try it as everyone says its great.

  • Do you think the higher percentage alcohol makes it taste better?

    • There's just something about getting a Strong Zero lemon to kick start your day.

      • Just add some Vodka/Soju to it. I drink quite a bit of craft beer and I don't think alcohol percentage really makes that much of a difference in terms of taste, unless there's too much (like 13%) or too little, but often good tasting ones have fairly high percentages (6-7%). I just don't go out looking for percentages.

If you're just looking to get drunk, there's much cheaper ways to do it.

The higher alc% will increase the tax. A $30 six pack would have $10+ tax. This is why booze brands weaken Australian products alc% and shrink the bottles.

  • Depends where you are but there is a shop called Bedelis liquor in Croydon that had the full size cans for $10 each a little while back. Kicking myself I didn't at least get 1

    • Yeah im in melbourne so I might have a try. Online ones are roughly the same but shipping ontop.
I found a shop in clayton called 'Hong Kong Supermarket' that also has it which is a bit closer so might try there too.

You can get the same by substituting soju + soda water. The reason Strong Zero's popular is because it's cheap and can be purchased from any konbini 24/7. Some Japanese restaurants here sell it as a novelty, but I definitely wouldn't pay more than $10 for a large can.

    • Yeah it's a cheap drink to get high piss for money ratio. Once you pay more than $5 for it it's just not worth it.

      • Yeah these stuff are about $1.5 - $2 from pharmacies here in Japan.

The reason it is popular is because its so cheap in Japan. It honestly doesn't taste amazing. I've had the ones in Japan and the Aussie version and honestly its much of a muchness.
