Galaxy Watch 4 LTE: Battery Life as a Standalone LTE Device

Hi folks,

I need feedback from GW4 LTE owners please. How long does the battery last when running the watch standalone with Always On LTE?

I'm considering buying this for my little one rather than a Kids Cellular tracker e.g. Spacetalk, Moochies, etc. They are completely hit or miss.

If the GW4 can last a day that will work better for me than the mentioned trackers.

Thanks all.

  • LTE 4G "ON" is a killer to the battery for these Samsung watches of course going bigger Watch like 46mm will have a bigger battery, saying that I haven't tried this all day with the newer Samsung Watch 4 I own as haven't signed up to 4G/LTE as yet, so not 100% sure you'll get a day out of these newer models but by experience from older models does drain battery life faster when LTE 4G is on and day what whole day, 8 hours of the day?

  • School day - 8am to 5pm (9hrs). I've heard lots about the bad battery so am unclear whether it will last. I'd turn WiFi off, Bluetooth off, GPS on (for location tracking), AOD on (unless if needing more hrs like during a school excursion), No 3rd party fitness apps. No music streaming needed.

  • Dont even think of that. Lte on a watch? Seriously

    • There are a whole range of kids trackers with LTE. I'm pretty sure the GW4 outperforms them. But put the question out to confirm seeing the bad reports re the battery.

hold off for a month, watch 5 will be announced.

gw4 will get cheaper, or watch 5 might be better as i heard bigger battery

    • I was thinking the same. Little one is off to camp for a week before then, so in a tough spot 😁. Not crucial but a real nice to have an SMS in the evening or at least knowing they're where you expect them to be 😂. The kids trackers all appear to be sh!te.

      • I understand what your going through as I have kids myself and also thought about those watch trackers, in the end I didn't buy any

  • i have the watch 4 LTE and find the battery lasts for a bit more than a day. There are certain apps that really kill the battery, but just having LTE on and having a convo (via watch speaker/mic actually works pretty well) is ok for battery life.

The thing that i'd be wary with, is that making a call is a bit fiddly. Have to call up a fair few menus to make a call. Taking a call is v easy though, just one touch.

    • Thanks for the insights. Appreciate it.

Is the day untethered from your phone i.e. standalone connected to LTE? That's going to be the typical use case for my kiddie. Calling will be for occasional early/late pickups, emergencies, and location tracking. Kiddie's 11 so fiddly menus are fine. Realize it won't work for young kids.

Don't require real-time ECG or Blood Pressure monitoring at this stage so that should save some battery life.

ive never had it untethered for very long, but my LTE is always on. not sure if there's some clever power saving on it if its tethered.
my guess is battery life would be fine if you turn off all the unneccesary things (wifi, bluetooth, health stuff). watch screen can also be off by default (turn on by touching).

Thanks for the insight. Seems like it might work. Will give it a try. Officeworks appear to be really good re refunds so might pick one up from them. JB are painful. Look at you blankly when describing problems, then tell you - it's up to the manufacturer. 🤦.
