RWC from Dealer or Independent Mechanic

Hi All,

Would it be advisable to get the RWC (in Victoria) from the dealer where the car has been serviced throughout or get it done from an independent mechanic. The car is just over 10 years old.

Price wise there is not much of a difference.

Thanks.

It doesn't matter where you get the assessment done.

The parts and labour required to rectify the unroadworthy items will likely cost more at the stealership.

  • The RwC isn't worth more depending on where you get it from.

If you've had your car serviced at the same place throughout the last ten years, you obviously have some level of trust, so just go back to them (especially since you say that the price isn't much different).

  • i would not get it done at a dealership. everyone i know who works at one or knows anything about them knows how they cut corners because they just don't care, a guy i know even works at one, he won't get his car serviced there because he's seen what they do lol

    • Got any more details on these? I myself don't trust mechanics in general, so it would be interesting to heard some stories about what they are up to

Its the same certificate no matter where you get it from. Shop around and pick the cheapest.

  • RWC, safety certificates or whatever else you want to call them in the real world generally aren't worth the paper they are written on, having said that though if the dealer has a 'preferred' person/company to do all their RWC's they won't be the 'preferred' person/company for long if they are anal about their job and are continually failing vehicles.

  • my experience with RWC is just the mechanic way to rort you extra money on unecessary repairs, you'll be very lucky to find one not picking out a mouldy on your seat belt or failing your windscreen to due to invisible sandblasting, and if you do please report back to help us all.

    • I have to get it done in order to get a car ownership transferred. I'll have to bit the bullet I think. The reason I was asking about the dealership as car has always been serviced there, they might be less inclined to find every small thing.

  • Its a bit of a gamble and depends on the inspectors propensity to pass it easily or find extra work for themselves.

I’d prefer a trusted local mechanic over a dealership but that means you need to find a local mechanic that you can trust.

  • Thanks for the response all. Got it done from a local mechanic.

    • We are on the same boat now. We have a 16 years old car that needs to get RWC. How did it go with the local mechanic? Did you need lots or repairs? That is our worry too.

      • Nothing needed at all. The car is 2011 model and very well maintained. Tyres were changed a couple of months back. The whole process was over in 30 mins.
