Popped Centre Yamaha Speaker. Whoops

Heya!

I'm running a Yamaha 5.1 surround sound setup with a Denon Receiver and Acer/Predator projector.

Yesterday I went to turn on some music via Bluetooth but I must have accidentally left the volume at 100% the night before. As a result, when the music played, it blasted at full volume.

I think that has damaged my centre speaker. At low volumes, dialogue is severely muffled and unwatchable. Temporarily I get around it by watching on Stereo Mode, but ideally I would like to replace the centre speaker.

The problem is that the way that the setup and cabling is done, means that the new centre channel needs to be a similar form factor:

I.e. relatively light weight, and wall mountable.

The centre speaker is a Yamaha NS-C40

Any idea what I can replace it with? Or if/how I can fix it?

Can't seem to find the NS-C40 for sale anywhere

Thanks a lot all!

TL;DR I think I popped my centre speaker of my Yamaha home theatre speaker. Need a replacement of something very similar (form factor/wall hanging), but can't find anything. Can you suggest anything please?

left the volume at 100% the night before.

haha your neighbours would be happy to hear that your speakers have popped!

It's possible that whatever the newer model that Yamaha has replaced the NS-C40 with might share the same internal speaker components.

Why don't you just replace the drivers in the current centre speaker?

  • Looks like that speaker is sold in a Package, your best bet to replace it would be 2nd hand if you want to mount it the same as your broken one is, there is a listing for a centre speaker from a similar pack, similarly specked and size. Otherwise, rethink your setup with regards to layout and speaker placement.

  • There are some on eBay, overseas though.

Can't you dismantle the speaker, remove the driver, measure it's size/specs, go to Jaycar, solder in new driver? It's not super high end, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Or else predatory pawnbrokers always have audio gear.

  • Sounds like a blown tweeter (muffled dialogue).

You can try and find a Yamaha driver that matches for that model.

Alternatively any other Yamaha centre speaker from a similar price range should be close enough.

Or a very alternative option- find a single matching tower and use that as a centre. Nothing stopping you. Centre speakers are normally sonically compromised for size commiserations. Centre carries all your dialogue, so the higher quality the better.

To prevent this in future, most Denon receivers from the last 20 years let you set a max volume. -10db works well.

  • Yamaha have a pretty good service centre in Australia, I had a receiver repaired by them and it didn't cost the earth.

  • Bit late now but check your receiver settings. On my mid level Yamaha you can set a maximum volume but more importantly a "default" volume so it always starts at the same volume.

    Probably blown tweeter.

Below is a link to a Jamo centre for $49 del. Wrong colour, but would do as a budget replacement.

Also a better speaker than the Yamaha. I may be wrong but I think the Yamaha has 1 x full range driver. The Jamo has 2 x 90mm woofers and 1 x 25mm tweeter.

    Yamaha is 276mm x 111mm x 118mm.
    Jamo is 300mm x 112mm x 112mm.

  • Guys this is all super helpful. Thanks a lot
At this stage, the plan is to take it to a Yamaha authorised service centre who will inspect for free and probably be able to diagnose the problem.

If it's cheaper than $50 to fix the problem, I'll fix. Otherwise I'll buy from the eBay ad listed above. Thanks a lot!

Honestly was really worried because although the speaker setup is super budget, wiring/electrical was expensive to run cables with electrician. I was worried I would have to rethink setup…May have been an expensive mistake.

Looks like it may not be that bad. Thanks!
