Seeking for Suggestion: Wrapping Cube Shelves by Wooden Pannel

Hey guys,

Here's a woodwork newbie trying to refurbish a cube shelves.
Currently, the plan is to wrapped the cube shelves by wooden or plywood pannel.

4 pannels required: two 1225mm * 300mm and two 300mm * 605mm.

In bunnings I noticed that they sell pannel of 1200mm * 300mm, just 25mm shorter than what I need.
The next option is 1800mm * 405mm, which need cut-to-size and kind of wasting.

Just wondering, what do you guys usually do in that scenario?
Is it possible to just cover the 25mm and 5mm gap by wooden strip (or whatever looks less ugly)?
If that's possible, where I can find these strips?

Any help for a beginner would be appreciated!

  • Cut the cube shelves so they are the exact dimensions of the new panels.

    • Hopefully they’re not made from honeycomb paperboard.

      • You can probably comfortably take 10mm off each end, they do have a wooden frame filled with honeycomb paperboard. Like a door

    • Wow never thought about this… will check if my current shelf good for disassembling and cutting.

The Bunnings boards are always a bit long, you probably will have enough extra to cover that gap

Also, are you considering the thickness of the wood? You're presumably going to have one of the panels overlap the end of the other one?

    • Thanks for replying! It's a good reminder and the thickness of wood is 18mm… I will check in store to see if they're just a bit of longer.

If you're doing it as a hobby and enjoy doing it, then great. Return on your investment probably isn't a big consideration.

However, if you're trying to save some money, then best bang for buck is to get free/nominal cost Ikea Kallaxes, etc. on Marketplace, etc. It's not only cheaper, but more sustainable.

  • a full sheet is 1200x2400 and all needed sizes can come from it.
have timber yard/bunnings etc cut it down if you can't transport a full sheet
btw a proper timber supplier can cut exact size accurately unlike bunnos, saving a bit of time and getting a very neat result. they will have a per cut charge
    .

    • Any key word I can search for a proper local timber supplier selling board to retail? I'm in Sydney.

Canterbury timbers are pretty good and will cut for you.

Haven't got timber from them but blacktown building supplies usually pop up in my searches for things at cheap prices
