Need Some Painting Advice

Just about to move into an apartment and decided I should give it a fresh coat of paint and a slight colour change.

Any OzB tips of places to get paint from?
Bunnings seems to be the cheaper option when it comes to Dulux, but am I just paying for the brand name by using their paint ?

Bunnings is not the cheapest, it’s actually cheaper to go to a Dulux store.

Different people like different paints. For a freshen up IMHO it does not really matter what brand you go for, but for new paining or repairs the undercoat does matter.

The biggest thing is to make sure you do the prep work correctly before painting over ALL of the existing paintwork.

Look at Inspiration Paints. They have good deals.
    Also, try Wattyl/Solver.
Use low VOC regardless of brand

Go to a Haymes store. You'll get good advice and great prices - better than Bunnings. Plus their paint is made in Australia.

    • This, Haymes paints are pretty good and the staff actually seem to know something!

Plus their paint is made in Australia.

All major brands are made in Australia. Haymes IIRC is the only one that's also Australian owned. Quality paint but it is high end priced. Dulux is also premium priced thanks to long term great marketing but is also decent quality as is Taubmans (IMO Taubmans is slightly better quality, at least in the premium end of products). Wattyl had a great name for their exterior paints but squandered it and are definitely seen as mid tier now.

      • Do you know who white labels for Aldi?

        • No idea, didn't even know Aldi ever had paint. Should be on the can though in small print.

I like bunnings because when I run out of paint at 8pm Friday night, I can go get more… 😅

    It's a trade for a reason.

    • And that reason is that people are too lazy/rich to do it themselves.

      • Agree. While painting isn’t difficult it’s a bit of an art, but onenthats not hard to get decent at.

The hard bit is applying the tape. The painting bit is easy just time consuming.

@dust: I don’t believe in masking. I find it not necessary most of the time and the time taken to mask is probably linnet than taking extra time to freehand.

Steady hand, decent brush and a wet cloth nearby for rare mishaps.

            • @Euphemistic: Yep, don't need tape unless spraying. A quality brush will hold it's shape making cutting in far easier.

Don’t buy the cheapest brushes or rollers. Cheap Brushes lose their bristles too quickly and rollers will leave fluff on the walls.

    Preparation is the key.

I recently had my place painted. 3 weeks prep. 1 week painting

Use the branded paint specific masking tapes.
Cheapo 2 dorrah shop masking tapes bleed paint, may aswell not use tape.

  • A friend who has a painting company and is doing our place (interiors only) has recommended Wattyl even though we said we were happy to pay additional and get Dulux.

Having just painted the entire exterior of my house recently - my 2c worth on the subject (which generally aligns with whats said above).
    - prep is CRITICAL.
As stated you should spend MORE TIME preparing than painting or you're doing it wrong. I rushed in a few areas and a week later I had all my new paint there blistering so had to do the horrible job of stripping it and doing properly. Proper prep saves you this and also means your painting is faster and will last longer.

    • buy quality brushes & learn how to wash them up and store properly
You can skimp on many things but unless you're paining a yard fence or chook shed don't do it on brushes. A quality brush will last so much longer and work so much better than a cheapie or even a mid priced one. Buy the best one you can find and you won't regret it. Just wash up properly every single time or even the best brush will become useless.

    • learn to cut in properly to avoid using tape
Sucks at first - but with the proper sash/angled cutter is pretty easy. Good painters are able to just use a normal brush - at first you'll curse it but if it's a big job it will save you so much time vs cutting in. I also tried paint shield (like a big ruler) and they sucked. Just go slow as much easier than cleaning up a spill and learn to do the right order of painting e.g cornice>ceiling>wall

    • use the best quality paint you can afford
Buy doing yourself you're ALREADY saving a massive % of costs vs a pro. So why try and get by with 'value' paints? You really do get what you pay for and better paints have much better coverage, last better and have extra additives.

    • Paint additives often assist
I was doing exterior and found that using Floetrol made it much easier and gave me a really good finish, given my pretty ordinary technique. A little goes a long way too - so a very small cost for it overall.

I'd been putting this job off for nearly 5yrs (had all the paint from when Masters closed down! And still have 60L of it for interior) - was first big job I'd ever done and is surprisingly easy with proper gear and watching some Youtube tuts and research. Just ensure you buy quality gear as it's worth it many times over.
