Giving way at an intersection

What do you do if you are at a give way sign and the car your suppose to give way to gives way to you and then you refuse to go. And then you both refuse to go.
This has happened to me twice now in two days
I refused to go incase the person starts driving and hits my vehicle

Then the other driver got out of his car and abused me

    Where's the MS Paint diagram?

This has happened to me twice now in two days

I refused to go incase the person starts driving and hits my vehicle

Then the other driver got out of his car and abused me

Sounds like kind of a weird situation to be happening so frequently. How quickly are you approaching the intersection? If you're still going at/near the speed limit by the time the driver notices you in their periphery then I can see them screeching to a halt, waiting for the 'guy who's obviously off to put out a fire' to go first, and then getting irate when you do nothing instead.

      Or OP could be paranoid?

      People out to get/frame him/her?

That thread is quite the read.

"But what if someone stalks me from the shadows, follows me onto a train, waits until everyone else has left and then starts running up to me in the cabin?" ~ OP

Gee, I dunno. Then I guess you're pretty much screwed? 🤷

Why can't you do the reasonable human thing and just hand signal for them to go?

Might make for a better world if we just communicated.

  • -1

If you get a hand signal you can go, it means you should go.

    • What if I go and then they go

      • +1

You are screwed because you broke the law.

      • Then one (or both of you) stop again. Exactly how fast do you think you can go starting from a complete stop? And you'll both be maximally alert and watching each other like hawks, so the chance of a collision is literally the lowest it'll ever be out on the open road.

      • Go ssssslllllooooowwwwwlllllyyyyy….. smh

      • You may give back a thank you hand gesture, this way the other driver didn't confuse you are not taking the turn.

That's why you should get a dashcam to record such evidence.

Generally speaking once you're in that situation the best thing to do is

    1. start to go and then immediately stop
    2. wind down the window and call out 'Sorry' to no one in particular
    3. wave at them and start to go again and stop
    4. honk your horn and abuse them
    5. start creeping slowly into the intersection as slowly as possible, saying SORRY! over and over again
    6. stop in the middle of the intersection and call out to them 'wait do you want to go???'
    7. wait
    8. pop the hazards on and drive past them and yell LEARN TO DRIVE MATE

And then you both refuse to go.

    Flip them the bird…

    • Instruction manual for OP - How to flip a bird (Sydney ver):

      1. Get out of the car
      2. Unzip your pants
      3. Pull the bird out
      4. Flip it (up)

    1. Check cross traffic
    2. Let go of brake and move forward slowly
    3. If after three seconds the opposite car doesn’t move, accelerate
    4. Wind window down and give the other person a thumbs up
  • You only go when safe to do so, no matter what gesticulating they do. If you are required to give way, you give way until such time as it is safe to proceed.

If they wave you to go and a car goes around them and cleans you up, do you think they are going to accept any responsibility?

Some of OP's post… sheesh. You need to read Lifehacker. The majority of your "life" questions would've been answered already.

Well the second the other party gets out of their car it's now safe to go since they cant drive into you.

  • Do three left turns instead

  • If I had time I would just sit there until they go. It could be a Mexican stand off though. Or another car could come up behind you and give you grief.

If I didn't have time I would go through but very slowly. I have a dashcam though, so if they are going to intentionally crash into me, you would think that would void the give way issue.

I would get a dashcam if this seems to happen to you too frequently…which in itself is weird.

Semi related, when I'm walking with my young kids and cars stop for us to cross when we are on a refuge island, I wave them through, because although it's a nice gesture, I don't want my kids thinking all cars will do this. Some cars look at me like I'm a weirdo or look annoyed/angry also, but meh, who cares.

I think a Mexican Standoff when giving way to each other is known as a Canadian Standoff.

  • Play chicken with them until you get to the other side of the intersection… lol

OP needs to explain the scenario. It might be that he/she is the one who misunderstands the rules.

  • +1

I don’t like when drivers give way when they aren’t meant to. Just confuses things. E.g. when pedestrian waits to cross at a non-crossing and the car stops for them and other cars panic brake because first car stopped randomly.

On the occasion this has happened to me I may move off, but being cautious in case the other driver decides they didn’t want to give way after all. Usually ‘moving off’ means flooding it to get away from a less-than-clever person

How to tell me you're a new Australian without saying it. If the other person isn't going, we just go.

    • If it's a tradie car or a car with mods just let them pass
