Ordering from The Kids Menu

I’m sure this is a polarising one. I’ve had moments where I’ve been tempted to do it but have never had the guts to do it. Sometimes you just want a smaller portion or can’t go past some dinosaur shaped nuggets. Maybe it’s the ozbargain in you that can’t go past the price.

Adults ordering from the kids menu- do you do it?

My partner is quite small and often a kids meal is all she would need.

Unfortunately most restaurants have age limitations on the kids menu and refuse. At least Maccas doesn't care about a grown man ordering Happy Meals for himself.

Happy Meals are cheaper than a meal and you get a bonus toy. Win win!

  • I walk slowly due to my sprained ankle, can I pay pensioner fare for my public transport?

Ask for it politely (perhaps stating your reasons why), accepting it is their call to make and you aren't entitled to it? If they give it, great, if not, well, no harm in asking, etc.

Sometimes after I eat 2 large big mac meals I need a little more and order 2 more happy meals and tell them it's for my kids (I don't have kids).

Sounds like a lot of food, bro…

Are you making a documentary or something? That's a lot of calories.

I eat fast food rarely enough (probably 4-6 times a year) that each time I do go to a KFC or Hungry Jack's I'll order and eat practically whatever. Nothing weird ordering kid's menu items, for all they know, you're a parent buying your kid's lunch who's waiting in the car or outside :/

I also don't think the 16-year old cashier is going to really care or ask any questions.

I think it is certainly fine to do for take-away / fast food chains.
For in-house, you could ask but why not just go for an entree (or two). We usually order multiple and share them.

as long as its not a kids eat free menu

    i dont see why not
they are making more money from charging 10 bucks for a few chicken nuggets and chips anyway than from a salad with lettice

  • https://www.grilld.com.au/menu#forTheKids has some Kids items, but they don't ask for proof.

I guess if you want a Babyccino having a baby is required.

    • Babyccinos should be free with any coffee purchase. The fact some cafes charge $3+ for an espresso sized cup of leftover frothed milk is crazy. An insane mark up on 30mL of milk.

(Note I don't buy coffee at cafes nor do I get babyccinos - I have my own machine. But have seen the prices)

Usually a sit in place will have an age limit. This is because overheads like lighting, heating and rates will be factored into the cost of an adults meal, but probably not into the cost of kids meals. If you're in their establishment feeding your kids, you're probably eating a meal too, so will be paying for the overheads.

  • Yep, do it all the time. I often go to restaurants that let you order via QR code so they don’t even realise it’s an adult ordering until they bring it to you.

  • At J's Kitchen, I always get the kids spaghetti bolognese!

  • There's another option: the kids' menu is very poor value.

We have kids and on the odd occasion my wife has tried to order from the kids' menu, it's been very poor value for money - tiny serving, cheap ingredients, poor presentation. E.g. we had an eatery that doubled dine vouchers and it was much better value to reach the limit by ordering a seasonal vegetable vs something from the kids menu (leaving aside the relative nutrition of each).

Adults ordering from the kids menu- do you do it?

Most places I've seen clearly state the age limit for ordering from the kid's menu.

Not unlike requiring a Seniors card to order Senior's meals…

  • At one place I frequent, we always order the kids menu items. They are about half the price, yet are 4/5ths the size. Almost as much food as the “adult” menu.

  • I do it all the time. Ridiculous that, when you're trying to watch your intake, you're forced to order a big meal and leave half of it.

I just hate that kids meals are often crap.

My son discovered steak with Dianne sauce, that was the end of the kids menu for us.

  • I don't go into Macca's (if that is where the kids meal is)
The last time I went in was in the 80's. Nope, I tell a lie, I walked in a couple of years ago, had a look at what the menu looked like (so very different), and walked out again; no plastic food for me. If I want a hamburger, I go to the fish'n'chip joint
