Plex Server External 2/4 Bay JBOD Recomendations

Hi, needing some advice on a Plex server external caddy. I recently bought the 2 bay ICY BOX IB-RD3621U3. Super disappointing.

Was a replacement of the previous ICYBOX 2 bay, which was far more reliable.

This new one seems to have crapped out after barely 1 months use. Will be sending back for refund/store credit.

What's everyone recommendation as a replacement? Looking for user experiences. I have some eye balled but on paper things can be very different to actually using the product.

Will populate with 6tb blues, obviously needs to sleep (though my NUC i3, 11 should do this),

Cheers

  • What wasn't reliable about it?

Why not just get a single large TB drive?

  • It's suddenly stop working. Windows isn't seeing it as a drive that exists at all.

Done all the troubleshooting. Drive r ok. Usbports r fine. Etc.

I should have listened to reviews, they weren't great. They have changed the design from previous model, yet 4 Bay remains the same (hoping to stick with 2 Bay).

I suppose I could go a single external. But no option to add drives, if I do add more externals that means more PowerPoint's taken and more cables. Plus I already have 2 internal 6tb drives that need a home.

Plus performance on a single drive isn't so great if we're streaming a few different shows and movie in the house.

  • I know I am going away from your question, but why not put the HDDs inside the plex server? I have an unraid server that takes care of the array while the docker plex does not give a crap about anything outside it.

    • I'm using a intel NUC as Plex server.

I think I'm just going to lean into the WD elements path. Just need to wait for one to go on sale… of course EOFY finished
