Comprehensive Insurance - A Cover Is Not Listed in PDS

Hi all,

Looking to buy a comprehensive insurance for my Mazda Touring SP FWD 2022.

Had a look at a few of them and NRMA, AAMI and Budget Direct offer very similar price. As I have read on OzBargain, NRMA seems to be more trust worthy than the other 2. But in their Product Disclosure Statement, hail cover isn't listed. A Web chat agent confirmed that the PDS is outdated (sounds strange but ok) and they do cover hail damage. Should I trust this support agent's statement? I did save it to a pdf file though.
Where as it's listed very clearly with Budget direct and AAMI that they cover it. Should I trust this support agent's statement? I did save it to a pdf file though.

Got quotes from a few other insurers as well but their prices almost double the 3 mentioned above.

Another question is do you guys usually mention your tinting and dashcam in your quote?

Thanks you for reading

Should I trust this support agent's statement?

Absolutely not. If it's not in the PDS, it doesn't apply.

If it's outdated, ask for an updated one.

They do seem to offer hail damage but if it's not explicitly on your policy then nothing stopping them rejecting it in future: https://www.nrma.com.au/specialist-hail-repairers

Only trust what you can get in writing.

    • A million times this.

Whatever the agent told you (saved in pdf format) will suffice.

If concerned, take out policy, make an enquiry with the specific policy number, then save it as evidence.

Usually they state exclusions, rather than inclusions. Otherwise defeats the purpose of an insurance as it is impossible to write out all the inclusions.

    If it has been confirmed by the companies agent to you then their word overrides any PDS according to consumer guarantees;

    Products must:
match descriptions made by the salesperson, on packaging and labels, and in promotions or advertising

    Services must:
be provided with acceptable care and skill or technical knowledge and taking all necessary steps to avoid loss and damage
be fit for the purpose or give the results that you and the business had agreed to
be delivered within a reasonable time when there is no agreed end date.

You can claim a remedy from the supplier if the services do not meet any of the consumer guarantees in relation to services. Remedies include cancelling a service and in some cases compensation for damages and loss.

Should I trust this support agent's statement?

I would not trust the sales person. but you can ask for it to be included the insurance contract

  • thanks for all the replies guys, cheers

Of course it covers hail. Does it list that it covers getting crushed by a crane falling over? Of course not, they list exclusions, not inclusions.

When I worked for QBE insurance, approx 8+ years ago, the PDF listed what was included and a short list of what was not. But the general rule was that if it's NOT in the list of inclusions, it's not included.

For example: If space debris is covered, you can safely say that out-of-earth invaders are not covered. (Kind of an extreme example). Another example that natural disasters were covered such as volcano lava but fire damage was not (for example from a bush fire)…..

But in saying that, I would ask for an updated PDF
