[First Responders] Breville The Dual Boiler Coffee Machine BES920 $891.65 in-Store Only @ JB Hi-Fi

850

Targeted to first responders Original JB Hifi First Responders deal

Excellent coffee machine, see many previous deals.
I’m fuming because I bought a new one last week after my previous machine died after 8 years.

Yes they are more expensive than they used to be.
No they are not likely to get cheaper. They are now bundling them with the smart grinder only and are clearing the last of these out.
Yes you should combine this with a nicer grinder, if you can afford it.

They are quite short stocked (in WA anyway). Go through to the checkout to see where click and collect is actually available - there were a few units at Myaree and some perhaps in Joondalup only.

What bottomless portafilter did you get?

      Edit*
Yours will be the proper 58mm size so it won't help a Breville Express pleb like me anyway :/

      • +2

I've ordered a bunch of normcore stuff in the past few days - some via them directly, some via alterantivebrewing/amazon depending on where's cheap and available

Got the 54mm bottomless portafilter and WDT tool coming from alternativebrewing
        dosing cup from amazon
54mm magnetic dosing funneland v4 tamper from normcore directly

I use the Neouza one with my barista express and happy with it. Although wasn't particularly happy when I saw how much channeling I was getting. Set me off on a long quest

        https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08CDHC5ZN

        • Thanks for the recommendation! Have you tried a precision basket yet? Apparently it can make a big difference.

          • @Subada: I was looking at precision baskets but a stirrer with multiple needles was the final piece of the puzzle. Toothpick wasn't cutting it. Found one on aliexpress in rosewood that matches the portafilter handle. Worst I get now is a bit of channeling on occasion but always a uniform flow from the center.

I use an unpressurised basket so 90% of my improvement came from ordering fresh roasted beans. I use a dosing ring because when stirring the grounds get pretty fluffy. Tapping the portafilter settles them and then just use a distributor before I tamp.

      • I got the NEOUZA 58mm Bottomless Portafilter off Amazon.

Yeah it's a 58mm, though I'm sure between Amazon & AliExpress you'll be able to find one that works with that machine!

Would be interested in a link to the dosing ring and wdt tool you mention.

        • Can this dosing ring be tamped through?

My partner and I were one of the lucky ones to snag this deal
Shortly after we found out about all the awesome accessories.. our Amazon shopping list is similar to what you posted lol
Something so satisfying about making good coffee

      • +1

        Ikr! So much kit!!!

This might sound really elitist, but it bothers me when now I walk around (in Melbourne) and look at the setups cafes have and they e.g. don't use a scale.

They're wbc, dgaf or maybe I just need to read/watch/taste more!? How do they do it without any of the information!!!

Its really affected me buying coffee lol.

        • +1

          haha I feel you man.
I used to be a barista 10 years ago, I still watch the people making my coffee and silently judge them on their ability.

          • @Cludo: Lololol.

You know what else gets me? How in the world do you serve something you haven't tasted!

            I can't imagine the day I'm that consistent/confident..

        • You get a feel for it.

    • +1

      money well spent!

    • Genuinely curious as to why you would need the magnetic dosing ring if you're pairing this with a niche ? Are you grinding straight into the portafilter with it?

      • Currently I'm using a needle and my technique is messy, a dosing ring would make it a lot faster (i think!).

I haven't got the nz yet (or the wdt & dosing ring!)

    • $15 shot mirror

I think I need one with magnetic base so I can stick it to front side of the machine (not to leave it standing on the drip tray).

    • +2

No puck screen? Your shopping is not complete

      • Haha!! I am thinking the normcore puck screen, but I have about ~250 aeropress paper filters which fit ontop!

For the bottom of the portafilter, I was thinking of getting this cutter but the reviews weren't crash hot..

        • +1

I have the normcore puck screen. Is it worth it? Not sure, sometimes is a pain in the butt to separate from the puck.
Best thing I bought was a WDT combined with the Eureka mingion specialita. It is a sink hole for funds, I recommend roasting your own beans to save money

          • @moggyx: What do you think about the puck screen 'protecting' the group head?

I'm not yet sure what the routine is to clean the machine, but I often use the rubber thingy which came with the bdb and the grouphead has heaps of old bean!

            • @Kammi: It is definitely less residue on the shower screen as a result of the puck screen but that is offset by the puck screen requiring cleaning.
I don't really know about the claim of protecting the group head though, the only real benefit I can see for coffee is a more even distribution of water across the puck.

              • @moggyx: I am also in two minds about using a puck screen.
Initially, the screen takes some heat out of the water before it meets the coffee.
The output never seems to taste as good, and the puck is much harder to remove after the shot (I probably did not reduce the bean weight enough to adjust for the screen space).

    • Yes but ☕

You have good taste 😏 Here’s my setup thanks to Ozbargain baiting me into upgrading my barista express to a dual boiler

  • Always wondered…Anyone ever made 2 cups at same time as in photo?

    • +1

I don't have this machine (sadly) but I make 2 cups like that on the machine I do have all the time.

    • +1

Yes, sometimes my wife and I only want single-shot coffee, so this way, we divide double shot to single.

Is this why there are no paramedics? JB HI FI first responder deals? 😂.

    Will Sky News blame OzBargain?

    • Chris Kenny's head will explode

    • +1

If the news are true, first responders will miss this deal as they will not have time to check ozbargain.

    • If they spent $1k, the discount will be around $150. Not worth missing $250+ from work. Not to mention it will negate the deal.

      • Could always stop by with the patient if they are at the Northern? Just wheel them in for a browse whilst they wait for a bed!

  • Folks,

Which of the two models single / dual boiler has known seal leaks and more repair work ? 🤔

    • +2

The dual boiler is known for needing o-rings on the steam boiler replaced after a few years. They updated the machine a couple years ago with better seals on some of the connection points, but I'm sure the others will still need some maintenance.

The process is incredibly simple, you pull off a securing clip, pull out the pipe and replace the ring. Do that for each pipe and you're done.

In saying that there are other things that can go wrong especially if you leave a steam leak for too long, it'll stuff up the Triac board which results in overheating and causing even more issues. My bypass valve just split one day, requiring a new pump+valve, and the steam wand is known for leaks which is a bit more annoying to fix.

In saying that, all machines even a 5k profitec will require maintenance, so for under 1k it's an absolute steal.

      • +1

I had my triac board go after 5 years, seals hadn't failed but replaced them anyway with the triac and solenoid. All up about a $100 in parts from eBay and good to go again.

      • My first machine needed o-rings for the boilers every few years, I think the newer machine redesigned some of the connectors on the top of the boiler with screw connectors for some of the plumbing, I think the thermal probes still need the o-rings.

replacement parts/repairs for me over around 6 years:
2-3 thermal probes for the boilers (I guess they are inspected when the o-rings were changed)
steam valve (was dripping in the off position) around year 3
brew pump low pressure and no pre-infusion year 4 (did it myself with an Ulka from eBay ~ $35)
triac board (ignored leaking o-rings for too long) year 5
safety valve on the steam boiler (stuck open in year 5 after triac issue)

None of the repairs were expensive, parts were always available - generally a 2 week wait for service and repairs.

"I’m fuming because I bought a new one last week after my previous machine died after 8 years."

    But are you boiling?

    • +3

      They're frothing

  • Op - when you say your old one died after 8 years what actually went wrong with it? I had a few issues with mine at the five year mark but managed to repair it and bring back from the dead.

    • Mine just died after 10 years……it was my fault, had the "descale me" message it but left it running for 3-4 months, I'm pretty sure I killed the boiler/valve. Good units, just maintain it, when it tells you to….now going to try and rescue it :)

      • I ignored it for a lot longer than that! I've now descaled half a dozen times but the message still comes up while it's heating up. Using filtered water now and will try descaling every six months hopefully will go away eventually.

    • I took it in for a service for a leaking steam wand hoping it was just a washer that needed replacing
When they opened it up, turns out the boiler was leaking and was probably the reason our kitchen electrics have been shorting out the past few weeks.
      Machine still worked though!

The grinder that comes with it is fine. You dont need another grinder….

  • +1

my bes900 from 2013 is still running. on its last legs but have the parts ready to swap.

  • I bought it at around this price last year, a friend is now willing to upgrade his dedica and I am on a hunt for a deal lol

I use Mignon, and I have just found out about the sly mod. Damn.

I just printed myself a WDT and dosing funnel. My shots are never sour.

I believe, I don't have to spend more money to make any further improvements.

I have been making coffee for more than 5 years. Had a 100$ machine, then Barista pro. Now BDB.

The flow and pressure profiling might break my bank again, like buy an Italian beauty or something.
