PC No Display Output

Hi all. My trusty computer seems to have died. It normally runs 24/7, 365. I turned it off the other night, turned it on the next day, no display port output. Swapped to HDMI, no output. Tried another monitor with DVI, no output. Removed graphics card, no output from onboard HDMI. Tried a random power supply I had sitting around, same thing.

CPU and case fans spin up, you fan will only spin if given a little spin up. HDD etc sounds like it does something.

I'm assuming that the motherboard is dead, is there something else that I'm missing?

Completely unpower your system (turn it off at the source), remove the CMOS battery and let the capacitors drain and/or short CMOS jumper. Then try to reboot

RAM should also be tested, leaving out a stick of RAM, swapping one stick for the other OR getting a donor stick of RAM from a working system.

Check If your motherboard has diagnostic LED's or a buzzer (usually, this buzzer is an additional part you need to plug in manually, which products an error code when something fails) you can use those to see what's causing the motherboard to fail to boot.

    • Thanks for that. Forgot to add that I have done the battery removal and bios reset attempt, no charge. Just tried the ram, does the same thing with either stick in either slot, as it does with both, beeps if both are removed. No leds that I can see.

Remove the motherboard from the case.

Take a closer look at all the components to see if any MOSFETS or capacitors are damaged. This is what a damaged MOSFET looks like Capacitors should look clean and not corroded.

Then put it on a non conductive surface (desk) and connect only the most essential parts (Power supply, RAM, monitor to the built in HDMI port). Do not connect anything else — no network cards, no GPU, no USB devices.

Power on by shorting the POWER SWITCH pins on the motherboard. Circled in red.

Look for boot logo on your display and/or beep code from buzzer

Cycle your RAM sticks between all the RAM slots. If currently occupying slot 1 for eg, plug it in slot 2

If none of the RAM works please test new RAM, and if that doesn't work either suspect issue with motherboard.

        • Thanks, removed everything but stopped short of taking it out of the case, it's still dead :( Looks like it's new computer time, thanks for your help.

  • Have you tried another video card? I've been out of the game for a while, but onboard video could still be disabled in bios (though should reset on to default with bios reset).

Also try leaving CMOS battery out over night to fully discharge any power from the capacitors.

  • Best guess, it sounds like a hardware fault on the motherboard.

You've done most of what I'd do. What beep error is it putting out?

    Replace CMOS battery.

Try another DP cable if you have a space. Unlikely to work since you've already tried switching out to HDMI, but try it if you can.

Unplug whatever you can. HDD's, cards, ram etc. and see if it boots and shows on monitor. If it does boot, try plugging everything back in, one at a time and then test boot up before you put the next item in.

  • make sure your monotor is set to the right display input stting
