Stick Vacuum Cleaners - Dyson or Miele?

I am looking to buy a stick vacuum cleaner. I have used 2 Dyson stick vacuums in the past, V7 and V10 Absolute, with the latter dying on me only a few weeks ago. Both Dyson models barely lasted for 2 years before dying. Neither could be fixed.

Now that we are looking to buy yet again, one part of my brain is relying on my empirical data and is being very cautious, telling me to steer away from Dyson. The other part of my brain is taking into account the online reviews (Dyson scores more than Miele) and is making me go buy a Dyson again.

I have always wanted to get a Miele stick vacuum, but wife prefers to stick with Dyson. Also, we now have a pet who keeps shedding, so we need something that can also deal with pet hair.

So, which one do you think we should go for? Fyi, we are definitely not looking to buy any newer models that are north of $1000.

  • I have also read that Miele stick vacuums' dust container is quite small compared to Dyson. Also, opening it to empty it out is also not very easy. Is that true?

Sounds like you are realising the hype around Dyson's and whether they live up to it or not.

Buy a Miele non stick vacuum if you want a good vacuum

To be practical though, just buy the Dyson so your wife doesn't complain.

I am really disappointed with Dyson, especially when they charge a lot of money for something that does not even last for 2 years.

I found it helps to be tough with Dyson re warranty/acl. Do direct not via retailer.

  • We had two Dysons and they were great. Got a Miele Triflex and it was hopeless. It could barely suck up dust on a hardwood floor even with an additonally purchased hard wood specialty attachment. Sold it and bought another Dyson and it's been great.

    • Thanks! Which Dyson did you end up buying?

    • +1

Why did you buy 3 Dyson's?

      • From what I hear they don't last long. Battery in particular dies quickly from the constant charging and most people recharge them while hot (ie as soon as it's flat put it on to charge again) which further shortens the life.

        • +1

Battery is user replaceable - we've done it on ours.

          • @Chandler: Yes but $150 every 2 years still isn't appealing.

            • +1

@apsilon: They are more like $35 per battery online. Not sure where you go $150 from

              • @mhz: From Dyson. I assume $35 is aftermarket and therefore probably lasts even less time in use and life.

My partner and I bought Miele as we didn’t want to get sucked into the Dyson hype. After a few uses, realised the suction isn’t that good and had to do multiple passes and the dust bin was too small to do the full house in one go. Returned it and got Dyson v12. Best vacuum ever!!
It’s worth the hype and money. We would never go back to other brands.

I believe it is now just V8 or V10, etc, for Dyson, as they have cut down on the variants. The new versions also have an anti-tangle head which should be a plus with animals.

In what way are the previous Dysons dead? If it is battery, Dyson is pretty good at sending out replacements. If something else, it may be an issue with lack of ongoing maintenance.

On the V10, the battery started playing up, then the filter. Ordered replacements but by then the power button malfunctioned which could not be repaired. So returned the battery and filter.

Still running a DC59 bought in an OzBargain deal from about 2014. Has had two battery replacements ($75 each) and new filters etc, but still going great.
Have just moved it to the shed and bought a new V10 Absolute for the house, which is fantastic, so far. So much power.
All the problems I've ever had with Dyson have been solved by simple fix or replacement parts.

    • Me too. DC59 from 2014 and only recently got its first replacement battery. And the genuine Dyson battery was cheaper than the aftermarket ones and arrived the next day! Other than that I've only had to change the brush bar for a minor sum. It's been really good value.

    • We have a DC34, one of the first generation stick vacuums, and it's still good! We have hard floors and a shedding dog. Replaced the battery last year, with a generic one that had double the charge, for around $35. My biggest gripe is that long hair gets wrapped around the roller, so needs to be cut out every two weeks or so. I'm half wishing this vac would die so we can get a newer one with the tangle free roller.

Also have a Miele corded vac that has lasted over 15 years, and still has amazing suction, never needed a repair. It's used less often because I can't be bothered plugging it in and lugging around the barrel. So I can recommend both Miele and Dyson!

  • Both Dyson models barely lasted for 2 years before dying. Neither could be fixed.
I am really disappointed with Dyson, especially when they charge a lot of money for something that does not even last for 2 years.

Dyson has a 2 year warranty, so if it really didn't last two years, then it is covered.

Are you looking after the unit? You do need to do maintenance on them from time to time, like cleaning them and washing the filters etc

When I say they barely lasted for 2 years, they were just over the warranty period when they died. I was a bit slack with washing the filter, only because you need to wait until it has dried, so you can put it back on. I would only clean them when the vacuum would keep turning off intermittently.

        Hi mate,

Just letting you know, we’ve always experienced excellent service with Dyson.

Even if your warranty is just over, just ask them and let them know about your experience.

We’ve ever had machines over 2 years by a couple of months, and they still swapped the part for free. And happened a few times.

And also, if you have a registered machine or model with them that is obsolete (like a V6 or DC59), you can get a 25% discount off any product they sell.

Had a V6 till it died, battery and motor head died after years of use.
We then grabbed a V11 outsize off of Facebook marketplace for 1k.
Best 1k we’ve ever spent. Sorry but the rest of the vacuums just don’t do what this vacuum does.
It does a whole two storey house, it does it all in one bin, it handles two long haired females and a briard dog and the design of the motor head means I probably only have to clear it once or twice a year.
It’s been going years. I don’t have any issues with it. We have polished concrete and large rugs downstairs and carpet upstairs with wooden stairs.
If my vacuum was pinched… because I still think this one has years before it breaks down I would jump back on Facebook marketplace and buy another one for 1k(just checked and I have two available in my search)
We’ve bought group gifts for family being the normal v11 and the v15 and they aren’t as good as the outsize.
    Its worth the money

Your V6 would have given you a 25% discount directly with Dyson, and you could buy it brand new for almost 1k

All you need is the serial number.😊

      • I didn't know this. Man, I have four dysons - one ancient stick, a V6 and now a V10. Plus I have a mains powered one.

we love the v15 laser, it really helps with showing which part is dusty. the hair screw tool is so good as well, getting the long hair out of the carpet was really hard before and it used to get all tangled up on the v6.

I recently got the Dyson V15 and omg I love it.
    It's heavier than older Dysons.

    • heavier doesn't sound good .. ?

      • +1

Well the battery lasts 40 minutes, which makes it awesome.
I also like the dust mite count as I am allergic to dust mites.
Works so well for me. I can do bed, pillows and blanket every night before I sleep. It's also a lot quieter.
        I upgraded from the V7.

      • +1

heavier is good imo. Works my forearm muscles on my left side……..

  • Have you looked at something like the Roborock H7? I am using this now as a replacement for an aging Dyson (dead battery) and it was a huge improvement.

I happen to have both Dyson or Miele, since I bought the Dyson, haven't touched Miele in years. Dyson is so convenient.

  • I'd go with one of the Miele options. I haven't used the Dyson but I have used and owned several other Dyson appliances and have always been a little disappointed or at best on the fence about them. IMO they're an over rated brand.

    Consider the Xiaomi vacuum cleaners

  • Xiaomi

  • Had a Xiaomi G10 for a year now. Despite battery concerns it's still going strong. Barely ever pull out the big Miele vacuum anymore - more a once a month or two clean.

  • You do realise that Dyson has a 2 year warranty? Have you contacted them for replacement batteries and chargers? Or you can buy a new battery for your old Dysons.

    • I bought a ebay third party battery for my V6 when my original one died.
I really shouldn't have - it lasted about six months.
I just coughed up for a genuine battery from the Dyson store in the end.

  • I've been happy with my Xiaomi Dreame V9. A friend was very impressed with the motorised head and swivel compared to her Dyson. Worth having a look into.

  • +2

maybe if you cleaned the Dyson it generally works wonders

    • I agree with this. If you clean the filters, the suction improves immensely.

  • Had one of the old DC barrels that lasted 15 years and blew up (pretty damn good imo). Now I have the V7 and it's been going strong for 4+ years. Have to clean the filters regularly. I bought a spare of each to put them in while the other is drying. No battery problems and I charge mine when it's warm (which someone mentioned reduces battery life). Maybe I've been lucky but I'm happy with Dyson.

Have a serious look at Roborock.
I know the name sounds ridiculous but I have their robot mopping vacuuming S6 MaxV.
Not cheap but we'll built, good customer support and parts available. They have a stick vac….

Get a wired vaccum cleaner and it will last for more then 10 years.

  • Vax is the only way to go

  • Pullman or Henry.

As recommended by Choice, I bought the Bellini Bagless Handstick Vacuum Cleaner BTBBH19 for $129 about 8 months ago from Target. It has been excellent! Really good battery life, easy to clean - look it up. If you don't need really heavy-duty power, in which case I'd say get a traditional vacuum cleaner instead, this is great, esp. for the price.

  • @upended

Do you have the receipt or did you buy as used.

Dyson is pretty reasonable if you have the receipt so call them.

  • Not sure why the hate for Dyson.
I got the V8 absolute + around 4 years ago and it was the best decision ever. I feel it is almost getting towards the end of its life but it is still used almost every day.
The dirt it collects, it’s just mind boggling to see even when most of the times the windows are closed.

My next one will be Dyson again. Maybe v12.

My only gripe is the new ones have increased in the price a lot. Upwards of $1200 - $1500.

Will have to wait for some deals so that I can get my hands on one.
