Seems like quite a few of Dells laptops are on a decent sale!

I’m selling my M15 R3, it’s a great laptop but it’s more the looks of that iconic Alienware rgb. The loading times on the Alienware command centre are embarrassing considering it’s gpu even in the newer models. I’m looking at moving towards a thin and powerful new laptop, maybe something like Asus G15 or similar next.
when I was upgrading earlier this year I tried m15 r5 and r6. they don't feel premium any more, and design is meh. Alienware m15 is now more like what Inspiron G7 used to be quality wise.
Gigabyte pleasantly surprised me, and this is the first machine in couple years that doesn't leave me wanting in any way. solid as hell
X15 r1 feels flimsy
@shabaka any opinion about HP Omen 16 Ryzen ? cheers
@CyberMurning: I had one at the beginning of this year briefly
good build, feels solid, looks business enough, will not raise eyebrows in a corporate setting
but keyboard isn't great, panel could have been better with response times
also I wasn't lucky with my unit: it would crash consistently after roughly 20 minutes of gaming. I think I am not the only one who experienced this kind of fault
returned
@shabaka: Cheers
@shabaka: Didn't you also have the Kraken from bpc? How does that compare to the Alienwares and Omens?
I was about to pull the trigger on the Kraken in the next couple of days for $1700 (with a free kb), due to the full power 3060, qhd screen and relatively light and compact size.
It seemed like an okay deal too, but now there's a 3070 max-q Omen for a bit cheaper, which seems better. Or even a 3060 Victus as a budget optionWould appreciate any thoughts on how they compare, to help get through this analysis paralysis
@crentist: I am not really big fan of the kraken, because I think quality control was spotty
the build quality was not bad, metal everywhere, but very thin metal, feels a bit unconvincing. but that may be subjective, my Aorus just doesn't bend or flex
keyboard backlight caused coil whine on battery power, was very annoying. also backlight colours are a bit washed out.
screen was good, but Intel control software was constantly messing with the colour profiles. in general don't get me started on their control software, maybe Intel ironed it out by now? I am not up to date, it's been 6 months since I returned mine.
mine was constantly overheating.
a lot of people were happy with their units though, maybe I wasn't lucky with mine, YMMV
@shabaka: Thanks, I'd thought the build quality of the kraken looked good, but good to hear they can be a bit iffy
Shame gigabytes aren't on sale too
@crentist: yeah I wish there was a repeat of my April post (my 17g for $2299)
it's so unusual for me to be 100% happy with a laptop. oh well I am 95% happy with the 17g: occasionally I wish the damn tank was a bit lighter and lasted more than 3 hours on a single charge, but I guess changing that would trip the subtle balance of everything else
I just picked up a Lenovo Yoga slim pro for $799 at good guys, for those moments when I just need something light and portable that isn't a corporate machine with tons of surveillance software on it
I used to be a Dell fan and official reseller, and I will honestly say that Dell isn't the best for gaming laptops
I personally have an Aorus 17g and I think it's better than this. full metal build, mechanical keyboard, 300hz panel, per key RGB, easy maintenance
17g with 3060 costs about the same, and if you wait for a special, 3070 is within reasonable reach, too. I got my 3070 for $2200 in Feb refurbished (damaged box really, brand new otherwise), 3060 brand new is about the same but is bound to come down.
I mean, yeah, if you want portability, go for lighter smaller units, if that's important to you. but if you want to, you know, game AAA, get a proper gaming machine and rejoice
