No 5G on Sony Xperia 1 II

Hello,

I am on Boost Sim, and my overall connection is pretty poor on my Sony Xperia 1 II.
What's worse is that I do not get 5g. I have never seen the phone connect to 5g services.

Is there anything I can do about this or is it because it is an overseas phone?

Thanks,

Has boost activated the 5g trial on your service? You should have got a text.

Next is where is the closest telstra 5G tower near you? Do they use any of the NR band your phone support? From https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies you need them to use the band 78 which based on GSMArena your phone supports

Your phone does not support all of the 5G frequencies in use in Australia. Also, you may not live in an area with good 5G coverage. Check your 5G coverage maps.

See GSM arena for 5G band frequency support

    1, 3, 28, 77, 78 NSA/Sub6

(Bold: supported. Not bolded: not relevant in Australia).

You can also read the "Will my phone work in Australia" wiki page that I wrote a couple of months ago.

    • Does Telstra use 28 in their deployment?

      • For Telstra
        n5 (850 MHz)
        Channel width 25 MHz
        Status: Build-Out

        n7 (2600 MHz)
        Chan width 20 MHz
        Status: Planned

        n78 (3500 MHz)
        Chan width 80 MHz
        Status: Active

        • I'm in the city quite often and I do not even get 5g there.

          • @Macgyver: Are you using dual SIM function? According to SONY, you need to disable the secondary SIM for 5G to work.

            https://www.sony-mea.com/en/electronics/support/articles/002…

The usage of 5G network is restricted when two SIMs are activated in Xperia 1 II Dual SIM device. To use 5G network, please deactivate the secondary SIM.

If it doesn't work, you might need to ask around in XDA forums or reddit. There are some discussions about imported Sony mobile phones not playing well with Aussie telcos.

            • @scrimshaw: Sorry for the late reply. I would try to disable dual Sim(I am only using one Sim so maybe it's already disabled) but I called ##4636## and had a play around in there. Ever since I did that, my eSim settings fails to launch. I can go into normal settings, but once I click eSim, it just crashes every time.

Any idea how I can fix it? I don't want to reset the phone.

              • @Macgyver: You could try clearing the cache for the settings App.

Go to the normal Settings page, scroll down to Apps. In the list of installed apps look for Settings, tap it's "Storage" statistic then tap Clear Data or Clear Cache.

If this doesn't work I'm afraid I have no other suggestions other than a factory reset.

  • Since Sony no longer sells Mobiles in Australia I don't believe they get whitelisted for 5G access by Telstra. There is a long thread about it on Whirlpool.

  • I have this same phone (HK version). The first few days I had it, I did notice the 5G. Then the symbol never appeared again. I'm with Vodafone and when I ask them, they tell me that 5G is limited to only a few blocks in the CBD.

It's been a couple of years and I've just about given up. I'm ready to upgrade the phone.

    • How's your reception?

      • I've got one word for it: "shit".

I originally thought it was just the way the phone displayed the "bars", but it often doesn't seem to be the case. Usually just 1-2 bars in the middle of the CBD when I'm downstairs. Right now, I'm upstairs at my place and I've got 0 bars.

        • Same but I tried calling ##4636## from my phone app, I then selected the option with the most network options. Had a play around in there and I must say that my reception is a lot better. Not perfect but a lot better.

But for some reason, it caused my settings to crash whenever I accessed the Sim card section. I reset my phone and it is fine now.

          • @Macgyver: I did a lot of mucking around with it at the start with those options, but couldn't seem to do much about the reception. It hasn't caused too many issues (that I know of) so I've just left it.

Back to 5G though, I think it is a carrier thing (from the fact that it did work for the first few days that I got it)..

            • @bobbified: Did you find that you cannot access your eSim settings after going into those settings?

I have that issue, I tap into eSim settings and the entire settings app just restarts.
Do you know how to fix it?

Unfortunately as Telstra do not support VoLTE for this model and with 3G voice being turned off ( turned off) this Xperia will become an expensive paper weight.
