Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard - White - $19 (Clearance - Was $45) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass/ $65 Order) @ Kmart

1190

I normally use a MS Sculpt ergonomic split keyboard, I was in the market for another one but saw these for $19 on clearance (marked down from $45) and thought I'd give one a go.

It's a steal for $19. It connected easily (it uses a USB dongle), the keys feel good and I didn't perceive any lag. There were no dropped characters or any such issue in my 5-minute test. It uses a single AA battery (not included).

Note that it's big: much bigger and heavier than my MS sculpt split k/b: it has a full number pad and is also much thicker. It actually looks suspiciously similar to this one branded "Macally", but note that the Macally one is bluetooth and this one is definitely not.

The Busselton Kmart had loads of them in stock, I imagine other stores will too.

NB: The Kmart product description incorrectly mentions bluetooth; THIS KEYBOARD IS NOT A BLUETOOTH ONE!

PROS:

  • good feel: easy to switch between this and an MS Sculpt split keyboard.
  • looks good
  • works well

CONS:

  • keys are a little rattly (much better than others I've tried but not as good as my MS Sculpt Ergo)
  • size and weight
  • the USB dongle holder in the battery compartment does not hold the dongle well: it is loose in there but held in by the battery door.

  • 2.4 GHz. connection
  • 110 key full-size keyboard
  • Ergonomic design with cushioned palm rest - Split design and big palm-rest to reduce strain on hands and wrists
  • Different angles of the keyboard allow the hands to be at a more natural position
  • FN + Multi-media functions
  • Supports Windows XP/7/8/10/Linux/Mac OS
  • Low voltage alarm design, low power consumption, energy conservation
  • Working distance up to 10m (without any obstructions)

  • not specific to this product - Would wireless keyboard/mouse work on a KVM switch in a Monitor?

    • +1

I expect you could just plug the dongle (which pretends to be a normal wired keyboard) into the KVM switch's USB port. For $19 I'd just buy one, give it a try and return it if it doesn't work for me.

      • Thanks for the info :-)

    • Depends on specific device, some KVM’s and some firmware / driver packs are finicky - but right device sets - sure. Logitech unify and whatever the Dell KVM we have in our devtest rack works fine on windows.

      • Thanks for the info ..Ordered Gigabyte M32U … yet to be delivered … I have 1 mini keyboard/mouse combo(RT518) & 2 wireless mouse to test for now when delivered… will get a full size KB with backlight if all is well .. :-)

    • +1

I use a Logitech K400r with my KVM because it has a built in trackpad. It works well and takes up less space than a full sized keyboard.

The only downside with the K400r is that's annoying to remember to hold [Fn] when I want to use the real function keys.

      • If it's like the k380, you can change a setting in Logitech options program to revert to normal function buttons

        • +2

I use that on my Macs, but it isn't available on Linux. It is also hit and miss during boot which is often when you want function keys to behave like real function keys.

      • Got the MX Keys backlit wireless with Unifying receiver(Plugged into Monitor) paired with my old logi mouse… Works flawlessly .. Happy with it :-)

    • I use a wireless mouse on a Gigabyte M27Q, no problems with KVM :)

Aldi has a similar keyboard in black available online

Cheers OP got one, I had a feeling that these would end up on clearance with how niche ergo keyboards seem to be.
Was tempted to get one when they first appeared in stores but it was still too much for a random kmart keyboard.

        That was beautiful dude

      • Upvoted for the effort.

  • Hmm; tempting; both my sculpt keyboards have just started peeling on the wrist-rest thing. Does this one have an inverted-slope like the scuplt?

    • You mean like the magnetic attachment on the sculpt? No, nothing like that. I don’t tend to use it with my ms sculpt.

Cheers got one! Will report back when I have it.

Also had a MS sculpt prior and loved that.

Currently have another Microsoft one (https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/d/microsoft-ergonomic-keyboa…)
but find it a bit too big, keys are kinda too spaced out for me and also just generally too big that it eats into my general mousing space.
According to the dimensions this Kmart one is smaller than what I have so let's see

  • Nice KB, especially for touch-typists wanting to avoid CTS.

  • I have been using MS sculpt keyboard for a few years now. I can vouch for the comfort. Unfortunately, the USB dongle broke recently and there is no way to replace it. Even though the keyboard and mouse are solid, there is no use for them without the dongle. MS support said they cannot replace the dongle alone and have to buy a new one as a set :(.

    • Yeah, it's ridiculous. I would only buy an MS wireless device if the dongle is going to stay at the back of a PC.

  • Black would be nicer .. but it's an extra $13 and I can pick it up on the way to work tomorrow…

    Thanks 👍

Been using the J Burrow from ebay, a knock off of http://amazon.com/dp/B075ZBGX6F

It went on sale at officeworks for $11 at one point: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/574230
More compact and comes with track ball and wheel, it's a steal at that price.

  • It looks like if you sign up to OnePass(it's mentioned on the product page), you can get a one month trial for free. https://www.kmart.com.au/onepass/ This in turn should give you free delivery.

  • Ordered one, not really sure where I'll use it…

  • Don't skimp on a tool you spend a lot of time using every day. And white? That's going to look real bad real quick.

    • What do you recommend then?

Black just hides the crustiness while white shows it - I wipe down my tools weekly so don't mind..

    • +3

I used an Apple keyboard for years before I developed RSI, I’d wipe it fairly often but it wasn’t a problem.
I agree about not skimping. I’ve tried many keyboards; the sculpt is my favourite. My initial impression is that this is comparable. My main concern is battery usage. Time will tell.

  • if only it does come with a mouse… otherwise waste another usb hub just for keyboard.

    • Yeah it can be an issue, but my usb-c monitor has usb 3.0 ports built in. I use an mx master mouse which doesn’t use a port.

  • Are there any good value ergonomic mech keyboard or are they all crazy prices?

    • +1

I use a logitech k860 and it's good. Lowest price I've seen was $139 @ amazon, and you can pricematch at JB hifi and pay by gift card.
Currently it's not on sale so you will need to wait

      • +1

That's not a mech keyboard though.

    • +1

All the "Alice" style ergo mechanical custom keyboards are pretty expensive. I think this is the cheapest of the ergo mech boards so far, even cheaper than Aliexpress boards. But it's pre order https://epomaker.com/products/akko-acr-pro-alice-plus?varian…

  • Are there any good value ergonomic mech keyboard or are they all crazy prices?

    • +2

I don't know, it's been hard enough to find an affordable and comfortable ergonomic keyboard at less than crazy prices. The sculpt and the Logitech k860 are at around $170. Let us know if you find a mechanical one.

Alright guys I got it! Just spent 2 hours scribing for a meeting so…

    First impressions:

    • For me the keys are too soft, something I could get used to but not really my preference.
    • The wrist rest is hard PVC with a bit of squish, feels ok to me but does feel cheap - who knows, maybe it'll last longer that your more expensive pleather or plush type wrist rests though
    • It is basically the same size as the one I mentioned above that I already have (https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/d/microsoft-ergonomic-keyboa…) so sad about this one :(
It technically is smaller but that's only cause the MS one has curves :D
    • Personal issue: for me the left hand side key spacing is now too bunched up together, this is worse for me than my current one.
    • My one has an uneven base :/ - it kinda wobleh on my table even atop a deskpad
    • If you flip up the feet, there's no longer any grip so it slides around very easily.

    Conclusion:
Can't expect much at this price for sure, it's definitely better than a non-ergonomic for someone who is highly dependant on one like myself.
Wireless as OP says seems to have no issues - no idea on battery life though.
Unfortunately can't see myself using this to replace my MS one so this will have to end up on the Gumtree/Marketplace - I think I really just want a tenkeyless that isn't $200 :(

No Sir, Kmart is a retail chain that sells various types of goods at lower prices.

    • Much to learn, you still have.

    Hi Everyone,

Purchased one today. Its ok to use. The only issue I have is the hand placement on the left hand side. By the time you angle you hand to match the shape of the keys the soft pads dont curve around with it, so your wrist is half on/half off the wrist rest. The right hand side is fine as you have a number pad continuing the soft pad. If it curved around more on the left it would be fine.

  • The specs under 'materials' are strangely specific:

    Door mat: Iron hibiscus
Conductive film: Silver slurry silica gel

  • picked one up in person today from KMart, Miranda (Sydney) - about 5 left on shelf

Thanks for posting mate. My keyboard just died and this has been a great replacement. Still many left at Macquairie Centre.

It hardly takes any time to adapt to … except for B which I had been typing with my right hand.

  • +1

I've been using this keyboard and it's a gem for $19. Very comfortable and seems durable. Key strokes are adequate as well.
Fully agree with op's description and thanks for the post.

  • This will go great with my Pentium 3 PC and CRT monitor.
