Basic watch with step counter for a 10 year old boy

Hello all,

My son would like a basic watch (no phone attached) but preferably one that counts steps too (not a must but would be nice).

He likes plain black mainly.

Any recommendations on a decent watch for that age?

I have no idea about watches especially for boys.

Thankyou!

  • Something like this seems perfectly what you're after: https://www.amazon.com.au/BIGGERFIVE-Fitness-Activity-Pedome…

Xiaomi does a few great watches for $50 ish
Miband 5/6 can be had for that or less

My recommendation is to stop feeding him so much and encourage him to get outside. Don't count his steps. He is 10.

What? OP didn’t say anything about his diet or weight. Why on earth would you make a comment like this when someone is looking to by a watch with and optional step counter.

He said it would be nice if it did because we - parents and older siblings- have smart watches and he found it interesting to see how much people move. I'm not counting his steps nor is it a must but nothing wrong with anything that helps a kid to be more active.

  • Garmin vivofit jr.. version 2 goes on sale often for $40ish. Takes a CR1632 battery, and can be replaced easily. Need to sync with a phone to track steps

Xiaomi MiFit Band 6… Looks similar to a Garmin Jr. but a lot more more functional and about 1/2 the price. Can even get cool Pokemon bands for the MiFit.

I bought my kids vivofit jnrs, wouldn’t recommend.
Bands perish, screens got dead pixels.

If you want something watch like, I’d actually suggest a superceeded forerunner, like a 235, that way when in a few years they want to track spots etc you don’t need to upgrade again.

Given they are now 2 models old, they are going pretty cheap - second hand - got myself a 935 for $60 on eBay earlier this year. Got a 235 for $80 2 years ago for one of my kids.

  • $5 Milo bands :D

Actually no, the app is awful and the band loses time and I can't unpair and repair it to set it correctly.

    • Yeah, agreeds it's a terrible device. Even for free I ended up replacing my son's with a Garmin vivofit jnr

There are some basic Casio watches, not G Shocks, that have a step counter. Look for something like LWS-2000H.

  • A Fitbit with a basic LCD screen on it would probably be kinda fashionable for a kid.

  • Thanks all. Will check those out. Much appreciated.
