Entry Level 4 Bay NAS

Looking for an entry level 4 bay NAS - either the Synology DS420J or Asustor AS1104.. QNAP don't seem to be price competitive and Terramaster have some dealbreakers.

Go the Synology. Much better OS and range of apps.

Synology. Bite the price bullet, it’s worth it.

Another vote for Synology. My 418play has been going strong for 7+ years with no signs of aging and is still receiving every DSM update. Running much more than just NAS on it too. Running Plex Media Server, the whole *arr suite, reverse proxy, PiHole, MariaDB, as well as a 4-camera NVR through Surveillance Station.

Synology for sure. My DS918+ hasn’t missed a beat.

Worth considering the DS920+ For $100 more than the DS420+? May last you longer with a touch more grunt and upgrade I lift.

    Comparison here

Make sure to get a UPS too for safe shutdown if you have regular blackouts.

    • what would be the benefit of ups and is it mandatory ? can you recommend any ?

        Hey @ChipsChicky,

I have a CyberPower BRICs LCD for my Synology. I have the cheapest model (BBR700ELCD) with the lowest run time because I just need it to auto shutdown the Synology safely in the event of a power cut and Synology’s are low wattage anyway.

For my gaming PC I have a CyberPower PFC Sinewave.

You can also look at equivalent APC or Eaton devices. From my research APC seemed to be higher rated than CyberPower, although this might be higher up the food chain for those running servers. Eaton seemed less value for money to my needs.
