SSD for NVR recommendation

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone have a recommendation of a cheap 4TB SSD to be used on a NVR. I know it's not the best use case for constant writings but I have read reviews on SSDs like Samsung QVO that would last a couple of years anyway.

My rack sits in the living room and having a HDD spinning 24x7 there def adds some environment noise.

I've never had a problem, its like the smallest sound and you have to be pretty close. I've had one in the kitchen area and it was fine when in a rental.

Now in my own place, it's all hidden away. But still don't hear much. Even the HDD in my PC I don't hear that often.

  • Move it to a different room.

Interested on the SSD recommendation, not how to fix the HDD sound issue haha

It's expensive, overkill and use case will thrash the SSD. If you really can't get a HDD to work then maybe an 4TB MX500 for $499
They're better quality and cheaper than a Samsung QVO

Wouldn't recommend Mwave, bought a keyboard from them (showing in-stock) on Monday at 6AM - It's now 9PM on Friday and they still havent sent it out. They said they are "slightly understaffed in their warehouse" and that they'll post it out ASAP. I don't think that can be defined as a "slight" understaffing issue when it takes them over a week just to pack up and ship out an item they have just sitting there.

Well that's a massive contradiction lol at around $499 for the cheapest 4TB SSD

Most modern HDD's have a volume control switch at the bottom. Try that first…

  • I think the keyboard sound made to type this text is much higher than the sound made by the HDD

SSD's are not meant to be used for this purpose..

    Buy better hard drives.

  • I’ve been working in the Surveillance Tech industry for over 8years now. I would NOT recommend an SSD in an NVR. The constant low mbps writes to the drive is not suited for SSDs. I would recommend WD Purple HDDs. SSDs are not made with Surveillance in mind.

If noise is an issue. You should relocate your Rack into an out of sight / secured location. If the NVR has a HDMI out. Relocate it and buy a HDMI over CAT6 extender and hook it up to your tv.

    • I currently have a WD purple installed, the noise is not terrible but I often think it's raining outside. It's currently used just for home surveilance of a few Ubiquity G4 Pro cameras recording in 4k, so its actually very high writing. I did read somewhere that ssd's can still last a few years with similar setup.

      • Yeh. SSD will work. However, it will be hard on an SSD's TBW.

Probably Health Check your fans too. I would recommend Noctua or beQuite's low RPM fans for low noise.
