Turn Coles Vouchers into Cash through Loophole (Involves a Fee)

Thought I would share my little loop hole / trick I found out..

Even though the Coles website says you can't use a Coles gift Voucher/card to buy other gift cards, however I just purchased a Visa cash card with my Coles vouchers, so essentially now allowing me to use that card anywhere Visa is accepted.

For example Coles charges I think a $6 activation fee, so $100 Visa cash card, for $100 Coles vouchers for a $6 fee

Here's a link to the copy of my receipt for proof it works šŸ˜ (I went through a register not self checkout, not sure if that makes a difference)

**Not sure if it works at Woolie's doing this

Then you can use the Visa card to buy groceries from Coles!

    • +1

      or from the competitors

  • +30

but you pay $6 for that?….

  • +22

so you lose 6%, instead of just buying groceries as you need.
unless u can save 6% going to another store, why bother.

    • -3

      More like 5.7%. $106 - $100

      • the $6 is static, so the % is not fixed.

        I buy a $94 giftcard for $100 i lose 6%
        I buy a $100 giftcard for $106 i lose 5.7%

so i think you mean't 6/106 to get your 5.7%

this has zero relevance to the point i was making.

  • +29

You haven't converted the voucher into cash?

You've just changed from one form of voucher to another, while losing 6% of the value.

Reason: Deal isn't a valid bargain lol.

You paid Coles $6 for free

  • +2

    Why not just use cash?

  • Also, split payment is not allowed. Hence, you can use only one gift card per transaction.

      Or my favourites

      • save $2000 a year on petrol buy buying a $90,000 EV

      Or

      • save $2000 a year on fuel buy moving to a 10x more expensive suburb closer to work and buying a $1.3m house apartment.
      • You only spend $2k on petrol a year?

        • Christ, how much do you spend? I do about 10,000km/y in my own car. At about 11km/l, that is about 910 litres a year in fuel. Multiply that by the average price of fuel last year (around $1.75/L), that makes it about $1,595 in fuel for the year.

So, to answer your question, no, I don't even spend $2,000 on fuel in a year…

          • +1

@pegaxs: You get petrol for $1.75.a litre?

Average kms in Oz is 15000 and lots of us do more.

            • @Tleyx:

You get petrol for $1.75.a litre?

              What I said was;

by the average price of fuel last year

Up until recently, I paid anywhere from $1.30 to about $1.90 per litre over the last year. $1.75 was on the upper side of the average of what I paid over the "last year".

"This year" I am budgeting fuel being between $2.00 and $2.50 per litre for an average of about $2.25 over the year.

Average kms in Oz is 15000 and lots of us do more.

And a lot of us do a lot less, hence the "average" is only about 15,000. I do about 20~25,000 a year, just not in my own vehicle and I do a lot of my commuting on my electric motorcycle. For every 600ish km I do in my car, I do about 200ish km on my electric motorcycle. So, I do about 10,000km in my car and about 3,300km on my bike for a total of about 13,300 for the year.

              • @pegaxs: If I buy an EV today I am.saving petrol in today's price not in last year's price.

You can't go back a year and buy the ev 12 months ago.

So you are below average and you just take that number and apply it to everyone buying an ev

Glad everyone else is as baffled as I am at this. I legit thought that OP might have had some cool trick behind his galaxy-brain gift card shenanigans that I was just too much of a midwit to follow. But it really does seem like he's just paying Coles $6 to trade a $100 Coles voucher and get a $100 Visa card, when he could've just bought the Visa card from the start and saved himself the $6.

  • +4

OP/Noob obviously missed out the recent Cole Prepaid MasterCard sale when you only need to pay $94.50.

  • +2

Haha. This thread is funny. OP you are a comedian. 6% loss.. šŸ¤£

  • +1

Save up those gift cards mate, cos I've got a high yield investment vehicle I reckon you're gonna love!

  • +3

I have a great tip with the 'Fresh & Free Guarantee'.
You buy, let's say, a block of cheese for $8 and you come back and say you don't like it… You'll be refunded AND another block of cheese. Now, use your new funds to buy 2 blocks of cheese and then return, now you get 2x refunds AND 2 blocks of cheese… Now keep doing this doubling over 30 days and you'll at the end have millions of blocks of cheese AND billions of dollars!

Anyway, I am waiting right now for the manager as it's my 5th day and they have apparently run out of cheese…
In the mean time, OP, it is a good tip if you have absolutely no need for Coles vouchers, welcome to OZBargain!

OP needs to teach us how to "Turn Woolies Vouchers into Cash through Loophole" next time.

  • +4

More and more idiots on this forum recently judging by the comments. Surely basic critical reasoning skills haven't diminished that much that you can't put two and two together?

The use case for this is obviously for when you have received a Coles Gift Voucher for free (e.g a gift or bonus) or at a steep discount >6% and want to use the card as a form of payment anywhere else apart from Coles.

Thank you for your contribution OP - a good tip for those whose circumstances fit the above criteria.

    • +1

      fair point…

    • +3

Was going to say the same thing. OP hasnā€™t mentioned the source of the Coles gift card, but presumably for them to be pleased with this option they are getting them for free, as a payment/bonus or at a discount. The VISA option is then less restrictive in terms of what they can buy. I know someone who used to pay their rent partly in gift cards so the landlord (also a friend of theirs) could minimise tax. Not saying I condone this but thereā€™s circumstances where people might end up with an excess of coles vouchers.

    • +4

Or you can just use the Coles voucher on actual groceries at Coles and "save" $100 of your own cash without having to pay $6.

  • +11

Next up we learn how to make 20c pieces by filling the flats off a 50c piece to make it round.

  • So the deal is an easy way to lose 6%?

    • -1

Not a deal, it's a forum post. Op letting others know of a way to change a coles voucher to visa card, maybe if you have an excess of gift cards from people or a competition, maybe they are about to expire? Maybe people don't want shop at coles with their inflated prices anymore.

  • +3

Oh my god why i am reading this thread till the very end while i am having a nice sunday brunch at hungry jacks

  • Not really a new thing. We cashed our virgin points too Woolies cards, than converted them to visa gift cards. We did a trip out west so that covered the fuel.

    • Well not to you, I'm glad the OP posted, now we both know. (Good to know it works with Woolies as well.)

      • Pls share your exp later as you believed in this second hand PC dealer's word.

    • +2

And do tell how you can buy visa gift cards with Woolies cards?. That would be a significant loophole you have discovered! Hasnā€™t been possible for 4+ years

      • I doubt virgin pts (maybe Velocity pts) can/could ever be converted to any Woolworths Group gift card. The Virgin Money pts is a very recent thing. Hence, the info is wrong/unreliable.

  • Just do the opal hack

    • What if your mail gets lost in transit? It seems too much hassle. I am not sure whether the refund process has been changed or not.

      • If mail gets lost or you see the card being used, report lost to get a new card and try again.
