Travel eSIM for Europe?

Can anyone recommend an eSIM provider for Europe?

Purchased one through SimsDirect after reading through their FAQ. After purchase they said they do not provide eSIMS's at the current time.

I used 3HK esim - fantastic value and instant activation

Head over to https://mobimatter.com/ and pick from the many esims listed.

Just be aware that the 'clock' starts as soon as you scan the QR code to add the esim to your device. So don't do this step early else you'll run out of time. aka buy a 30 plan and adding it to your device 20 days before travel, means you only get 10 days of usage overseas.

But if it one of the 365 day plans like this one, then there isn't really an issue adding it early.

But whatever plan you get, make sure it works in the countries you are going to.

  • Truphone appears to have decent value, haven't tried them out yet though

    • Going to Europe in August too. Was going to go with Truphone as they do 6GB for 30days for AU$26.

Would be good to know if anyone had tried it

  • Felix eSIM and their international roaming, $20 (on top of the normal monthly fee though) for 365 days in a bunch of countries for 4GB data and I think 100 minutes phone calls. Had the additional perk that I kept my Aus number for the time I was overseas

Check this website with many options: https://esimdb.com/

    • Thanks!

Got an eSIM from one of the recommended options.

I used Ubigi a couple years back. I did notice it was cheaper to buy country packs rather than Europe wide ones. So we bought specific countries as we got there.

  • If you're going to EU countries + UK it could make more sense to eSIM your AU number and buy a physical SIM there to do the dual SIM thing.

This is because of EU roam like at home rules - you can roam across the EU like you would in the home country of the SIM you have (subject to some limits).

Check out https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/Prepaid_SIM_wi… for the country you're first landing in to see what prepaid SIMs are available for that country and the roaming inclusions, as well as any quirks in activating the SIM etc.

For example, I'm going to Europe soon and will buy a SIM in Denmark and get 100gb of data in Denmark and 9gb of data across the rest of the EU, Iceland, Faroe Islands and UK for 99DKK ($AUD20) for 30 days. And will use my Optus eSim with roaming for 2FA etc.

Wifi will fill in the rest of the gaps.

    • thought of this too. But unfortunately, only a handful of MVNOs offer eSIM for AU numbers at the moment :(
