Whats Some Good Earbuds for Using Both on an Airplane and Walking?

Hi all, looking to get a new pair of earbuds, hopefully something <$150 but can go up if its a good one.
Looking for something I can use on the plane but also walk around, so likely earbuds type where I can switch on/off ambient sound/noise isolation. This is for an Android phone/Nintendo Switch.

Anyone know if you can use bluetooth headphones on a plane? I've asked Qantas via twitter/facebook/website and tried 30 minutes on hold before I gave up. Last flight I had stewardess said someone didn't have airplane mode on and it was interfering with the flight (I had mine on with wired buds so wasn't me) but it made me sketch on what to buy lol.

I'm currently using the Google Wired Buds which I like but they don't work for the Switch and I've left them in the washer 3 times now so it doesn't always work well.

Can be wired or wireless, but if wireless preferably USB C/Wireless Charging.

Cheers!

  • I’ve not come across any plane yet where Bluetooth headphones can work.

I also wouldn’t recommend wireless buds on a plane as they’re more likely to fall between the seats if they come out of your ears, whereas wired you can just pull back up. Probably more an issue for long haul/if you’re going to sleep, but worth considering.

What do you mean you haven't come across a plane where bluetooth headphones can work?
As long as you are in flight mode you can have bluetooth on - I used my AKG's last week with Virgin.

Headphones are the way to go on flights - buds don't have as good ANC and you constantly need to adjust them.

I'm also confused by this - my earphones worked fine on a flight 2 months ago

I misread/misinterpreted - I thought OP meant connecting bluetooth headphones to the inflight entertainment system.

Thanks mate, that is a good point regarding wires, even if its behind the neck, as long as I don't lose them! lol

none of the airlines have problem with Bluetooth devices. They just ask you to turn off cellular network, even Wifi can be kept on.
In term of noise cancellation and comfort nothing beats Airpods Pro. I am on android and they work perfectly fine. I have recently used them on a 20 hour flight and can confirm they are very good for that purpose. However if you can wait for a month, wait and see how new Google Pixel buds pro would turn up. They probably have better compatibility with Android , will be cheaper and also have noice cancellation.

Thanks for this, that what I thought as well, but was surprised I couldn't find it anywhere on their sites. I was hoping this was the case, but was worried the flight attendant coming out being like "we have interference" and everyone looks at me with the wireless buds XD.

I've heard the same about the Airpods pro, its made me so tempted tbh but wasn't too sure how well it worked on Android, so this helps. I didn't know Google was doing the new buds though, I'm definitely thinking of waiting now, just to see what they come out with, since I really liked their wired buds. Cheers1

    • Using the Google Pixel Buds Pro right now and they are great. First international flight with them tomorrow, will let you know how they go.

      • If anyone is still considering the Pixel Buds Pro, I would personally recommend them. The noise cancelling is surprisingly good. Great for calls and the integration and intuitiveness with all sorts of actions and apps is great.

The EQ is OK and will only get better with a future update that is planned.

    What's an airplane?

    I thought we're in Australia…….

  • Samsung Buds2. Toggle between (amplified if needed) ambient sound and ANC by touching the bud. ANC is fine without being amazing and at a fraction of the price of Airpods.

    • Cheers for this, the Samsung Buds 2 is very tempting as well, I use a samsung watch and phone so they all look to work well together in the ecosystem. Especially as there's a Samsung Buds app on the watch. Definitely will check it out.

  • I think you should check out the Huawei FreeBuds Pro. Seems to meet all of your criteria besides being a little over budget, plus the dual device connection should be pretty handy for using both the phone and switch.

One of the best for voice calls as well apparently.

    • Thanks! i haven't seen this but love the idea of dual device connection. Thinking about it, I actually use my phone and laptop a lot for bluetooth so it would make that sooooo much smoother. Cheers.

      • No problem. If you are doing some more searching, it is generally referred to as a multi-point connection (but some manufacturers make up their own name for it).

Jabra is the main brand which has it for a lot of their earbuds.

My preference is Johnson & Johnson

    They're on sale too…

  • I use Samsung EarBuds+ and have no issues with them.

Used them on plane from start until end without anyone bothering me.

Love them, find them much better than any other wireless set I've used.

  • Switches can't use Bluetooth headphones / earbuds.
Edit - wow you can! Why on earth did it not launch with this capability if the hardware would support it?!

  • Was on a flight on Monday and there was a crew member in transit sitting near me wearing airpods during the flight, is that enough of an endorsement?

The case can act as a Bluetooth receiver on any device with 3.5mm jack (in your case on the plane).
