Smart Radiator Valves and Thermostat Suggestions

Hey all,

Getting sucked into the world of radiator panels and underfloor heating, and none of it seems simple.

I'm putting radiator panels into 6 rooms, and installing underfloor heating throughout an extension powered by a gas combi boiler. The panels will be fitted with manual thermostatic valves, however ideally I'd like to be able to control these individually via a hub/app. The reason for this is, for example, two of the rooms are used during the weekdays but not at all on the weekend - it would be great to be able to automate these so they heat up only on the days they are being used, and not on the other days to save gas.

From what I understand, a system like Nest allows for whole of house 'smart heating', however not individual zone/room control.

Looking for any suggestions on systems you've seen work well, including smart thermostatic valves/wifi valves, and a central unit that's google home compatible. I'd read about Hive in the UK, but can't find many details around Australian compatibility. I also don't understand what needs to happen on the boiler side - does this require its own smart control unit as well?

Thanks for your help OzB!

    Is this hydronic heating?

    • Yes hydronic, apologies

      • That's all good my friend.

I've never had hydronic heating but I was under the impression that's it's cheapest to run continuously over the colder months. ie. it's cheaper to keep the room/s at a constant temperature rather than fluctuate depending on the day of the week.

        • Interesting point - hadn't considered this as it seems counter intuitive, but I'll do some more research - if that's the case then there's little point installing smart valves, would just keep them on 24/7 and save myself the hassle!

@mshart: I'm sure there's someone on here that will have hydronic heating and a spreadsheet with efficiency pie charts 🙂

  • I have www.heatmiser.com.au 7 zone system controlling Bosch 5000 combi boiler - using zoning manifold.
Instead of usual hydronic panels I have www.facebook.com/discreteheatau (www.discreteheat.com and www.hydronicsupplies.com.au/product-category/thermaskirt)
Both UK companies represented in AU. Highly recommend.

Also if you have already radiator panels installed, you can use smart wifi operated radiator valves i.e. https://shop.shelly.cloud/shelly-trv-wifi-smart-home-automat…
Which you can use with Google/Alexa or third party automation systems i.e. https://forums.homeseer.com/forum/hs4-products/hs4-plugins/l…

    • You're a champion, thanks mate I'll look into these!
