Price Match on Same Item with Different Name

I was at Officeworks and was going to buy this tree. Note this listed image on the OW page.

I did a quick search and found this product that was currently on sale at a lower price.

I showed this to the guy at OW and suggested that as the images used in both listing were exactly the same, that would suggest they are the same product.
He said that as they are listed as different named items, they are different and he would not price match.
I suggested that Officeworks could just rename everything to avoid having the same listed item as competitors.
He eventually gave in and gave me the $2.50 discount I was looking for.

Who was in the right here?

  • on temple and webster it even lists the collection as "botanica", it's just that the website seems to prefer confusing labels, whereas officeworks prefers to be clearer.

that would suggest they are the same product.

    Nope, different product codes

They are also different size and weight…

    Overall: 24cm H x 20cm W x 20cm D
    Overall Product Weight: 0.9 Kilograms

    vs

    Product Dimensions (mm)
    70W x 70D x 280H mm
    Product Weight (kg)
    0.7 kg

    • In the pictures on both OW and TW that clearly show the dimensions; they are the same.

To deny it isn’t the same product is delusional. (Or a troll).

      • different product code… get over it…

        • +3

it's probably an internal product code, so it would make sense if they don't match

one (maybe even both) of the sites is probably listing incorrect dimensions. i know i've bought stuff in the past that had the incorrect dimensions listed, because the items i was purchasing had been described in great detail in other places.

          • @[Deactivated]: Even if it was the same product.

OW policy will add the $7.95 shipping cost to the price, so it would end up being more expensive anyway…

            • @jv:

OW policy will add the $7.95 shipping cost to the price

Policy yes but they seem to forget about that at my local one. I priced match with a store 25km away and got the 5% discount without the shipping cost. Win for me!

I suggested that Officeworks could just rename everything to avoid having the same listed item as competitors.

They already do that, especially with things like printers… So do many other larger retailers. The get special versions made just for them, so they don't need to price match.

    • Yeah they are dishonest, I tried to price match a Motorola G5 and they refused because JB had a different product number despite obviously being identical.

      • +1

I always just check the product number before requesting a price match. Then I know there won't be any issues getting it.

        • The sneaky bastards at JB and OW intentionally use different numbers off the same box 😭

          • +1

@Presence: There is usually a small, insignificant difference between the products.

$12.99 to $10.95… You've got to be kidding? Hardly worth the time, effort and persistence to save $2. I'd just buy the damn thing for $12.99. I feel for the Officeworks staff

    • +2

Once they include the $7.95 shipping, it was more expensive anyway…

    • -2

You’re on a site which goes nuts over a $3 ‘bonus’ that has 11 conditions/terms to have to adhere to, in the hope of receiving it at a future time 😂

      • +1

Huge difference though, you aren't hassling anyone

        • Asking someone who works at a retailer which offers a price beat policy is ‘harassing’?

Not saying the OP was correct, but describing it as harassing is being overly dramatic.

    Officeworks says:
    It measures 70 W x 70 D x 280 H mm.

    T&W website says (under dimensions):
    Overall: 24cm H x 20cm W x 20cm D

But you're right - the pictures (at least one of them anyway are the same).
Like others have said, I would not have wasted my time for a couple of bucks.

    • The picture showing dimensions are on both sites. Same picture.

1st thing I thought. Separate name for myer superamart harveynorman

  • Weren’t you entitled to a $2.59 discount?

    • +1

      No, shipping is $7.95

      • +1

Yer, shipping ought to be added on as its an online store.

How do I change my vote?

  • +7

I understand the need for bargains but arguing over $2.50? I dunno man I wouldn't have even bothered tbh

That's gonna be a no from me dawg.

    Two dollar fifty bro

$2.50 saving, but wasted hours of his and our mental energy. Probably gave you the discount to make you go away.

    • Probably gave you the discount to make you go away.

No probably, he did give a discount to make the OP go away.

  • "I suggested that Officeworks could just rename everything to avoid having the same listed item as competitors."

The images you linked aren't exactly the same. But from your statement and interaction he rightly thought that giving you the $2.50 discount was easier than you escalating to the manager, then the area manager, then the regional manager, then the state manager, the executives of the board, the CEO, then the shareholders…

Did you then ask the staff to carry it out to your car for you?

    • All the images aren't the same but there is at least one duplicate which is all that is needed to demonstrate that it is the same product.

He said that as they are listed as different named items, they are different and he would not price match.

He was correct.. Have you read the policy?

He eventually gave in and gave me the $2.50 discount I was looking for.

OMG you really carried on like that to save $2.50 on your artificial plant? WOW

  • People in here hating on saving $2.50 whilst upvoting enelope deals that are $1.70 cheaper than the last deal.

I was at Woolworths and as usual bought 2 French cheeses of same brand but different flavour. Both had 2 prices marked.
Checkout insisted that I pay the higher price on both or wait 10 minutes to get a clark verifying.
So after 10 minutes they took me to the shelf, they then corrected the price while scolding an employee in front of me. (award to the manager being professional?)
Back at the checkout I was told only one would be sold for the lower price. I said different item number please explain. So semi supervisor came out from back office to yell at me that I could only have 1 on lower price and the other on the new higher price. So I dialled the police and let them talk to the checkout operator. Another 30 minutes later I finally got one for free and the other for the old lower price!

    • So I dialled the police

      lol please be joking

      • They eventually got an entire new management. I had many issues with them before such as obsolete vegan items they tried to sell at 3x the original cost.
Now they also got a Coles in the same centre. What a difference that made!!
