Cigarette Advertising on OzBargain

Hi All,

Can I make it very clear that Cigarette bargains/deals/advertising should not be allowed on this website. The promotion of goods for sale, is the common definition of advertising; which is what this website is a mechanism for.

Advertising of tobacco products is illegal, and I do not want OzBargain to come under the radar of regulators and law enforcement.

Administrators of this site, must make it abundantly clear within the "Deal Posting Guidelines" that cigarette bargains/deals/advertising are not permitted.

My case in point: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70751 (Edit: Deal has been removed, sold out prior).

Thank you.

  • Yep, I think people have reported on it, however mods are not online, they will remove once they see it.

    Thanks!

    • This thread refers to more than just one bargain, I'm asking for a site-wide ban on cigarette advertising to be explicitly mentioned within the "Deal Posting Guidelines".

Advertising cigarettes on this website is already banned by the law, however it's clear that many members of this site believe that it remains within their right to promote such deals.

Mods are human too, they aren't on Ozbargain 10 hours a day like some of us are.

  • I strongly agree - nothing related to the sale of tobacco products should ever appear on this site.

The merchants of death should be denied all opportunities to communicate anything about their hideously evil addictive products to anyone.

OzBargain needs to immediately remove all mentions of the sale of any form of tobacco product.

  • Correct. Moderators were not online.

We are currently in discussion and will advise as well as add to the banned list / deal posting guidelines.

    • Excellent.

Please also note that other goods categories may also have advertising bans within Australia, and a mention that all posted deals must be permitted within boundaries of Australian law.

      • What other goods have advertising bans on them?

        • I'm mainly thinking of some product categories which are governed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (http://www.tga.gov.au/). i.e. Some health supplements, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
          Detail is available here: http://www.tga.gov.au/industry/advertising-regulation.htm

Perhaps also, pornography and refused classification entertainment products.
Furthermore other product groups may have industry-governed advertising codes; for example, alcohol.

I recommend that OzBargain seeks legal advice.

    • Just a reminder, that tobacco / cigarettes have not been mentioned in the "deal posting guidelines".

      • Thanks. It's on Banned Items, but yes we need to link that somewhere in the deal posting guidelines.

I'm not even a smoker but i impulse brought 17 cartons

  • Yes cigarette advertising has been banned in Australia since at least mid-70's. Dinner time so didn't manage to unpublish the post in time. Yes we'll update the banned list and deal posting guideline regarding that.

Edit: The community has done the right thing when the moderators were not online.

    • Banned item reported to inform moderators when they got back online.
    • Voted down so it disappears from the New Deals list and no longer indexable by search engines.

    Thanks.
